20 Cryptocurrencies the Market Is Watching Closely

A CoinGecko ranking shows that the crypto market’s attention remains divided between meme coins, AI projects, and major infrastructure platforms.
Summary:
- Meme coins and infrastructure projects dominate the ranking.
- Bitcoin is only in eighth place, while Solana is twelfth.
- Venice Token and wojak are attracting more attention than Solana.
- The market remains split between hype and infrastructure.
What the Trending Ranking Actually Measures
CoinGecko’s weekly trending ranking for the period May 9-15 does not show which cryptocurrencies are the biggest or which gained the most value. Instead, it measures something different – which projects attracted the most attention, searches, and user interest over the past seven days.
This is an important distinction because it explains why smaller projects can temporarily outrank Bitcoin or Ethereum – which sits in 19th place – in this type of ranking.
This week, Venice Token is in second place, wojak is third, while Bitcoin is only eighth. That does not mean Venice Token is a larger or more important asset than Bitcoin. Rather, it shows that it generated more short-term interest, searches, and social media discussions.
The same applies to Solana. Large, constantly monitored assets usually attract more stable attention and rarely experience sharp spikes unless there is a specific catalyst.
That is why the ranking should be viewed as a measure of the market’s current curiosity, not as a ranking of actual dominance or value.

Some of the Data in the Ranking Appears Clearly Incorrect
Another important detail is that some of the values in the table itself appear inaccurate.
For example, Bitcoin is shown with a market capitalization of $308 million, while Solana is listed at $10 billion – figures that are far below their real market valuations.
For some projects, the errors are even more obvious. Ondo, for instance, is shown with more than $1.6 trillion, while Osmosis is listed above $52 billion.
Even the first project in the ranking – Firo – displays “#REF!” instead of a value, suggesting a direct issue with the data source itself.
Meme Coins Are Once Again Attracting Massive Attention
One of the most interesting aspects of the ranking is the strong presence of meme projects and smaller speculative assets.
Venice Token is second, Pudgy Penguins is fourth, while wojak and TROLL are also among the most discussed assets of the week.
This shows that the market continues to devote enormous attention to smaller and more speculative projects, even during a period when institutional discussions around Bitcoin, regulation, and infrastructure remain active.

When such small assets begin dominating trending rankings, it usually signals an increased appetite for short-term speculation. Smaller projects often move much more aggressively than major cryptocurrencies, attracting traders looking for rapid moves and high volatility.
Infrastructure Projects
Despite the strong presence of meme coins, the ranking is not dominated solely by such projects.
It also includes more serious infrastructure platforms such as Solana, Hyperliquid, Bittensor, Monad, Toncoin, and Sui.
This is important because it shows that market attention remains divided between two different categories of projects.
On one side are meme assets and smaller speculative coins generating short-term hype. On the other are Layer-1 projects, AI infrastructure projects, and DeFi platforms viewed as longer-term technological ecosystems.
Particularly interesting is the presence of AI infrastructure projects such as Bittensor and LAB. The AI sector is the only theme represented in both halves of the ranking, which could prove to be an important signal for the crypto market.
What the Bigger Picture Says About the Market Right Now
The most important takeaway from the entire ranking is that market attention remains highly fragmented.
There is no single dominant narrative controlling discussions in the crypto industry this week. Instead, meme coins, NFT projects, AI infrastructure, DeFi protocols, Layer-1 projects, and major cryptocurrencies are all appearing simultaneously.
Historically, this often happens during periods when the market still lacks a clear consensus on the next major move.
When attention begins concentrating around a single theme, it is usually a sign that the market is gradually building a clearer direction.
For now, that consensus is still missing.
