Bitcoin At $75,000 as Markets Weigh Geopolitics and DeFi Risk

Bitcoin traded near $75,000 on April 20, with cryptocurrency markets under pressure as renewed geopolitical tensions and a major DeFi exploit combined to shake investor confidence and drain liquidity across the ecosystem.
Summary:
- Bitcoin steadies near $75,000 as Iran rejects nuclear talks with the U.S.
- Aave loses $8.45 billion in TVL following Kelp DAO exploit-linked contagion.
- Broader crypto market slips modestly, signaling caution rather than panic.
Risk sentiment weakened after Iran rejected a second round of nuclear negotiations with the United States, adding fresh uncertainty to already fragile global markets. According to the Time, U.S. President Donald Trump has announced the seizure of an Iranian cargo vessel following an alleged attempt to breach a U.S. blockade.
The development has heightened concerns around escalation in the Middle East, particularly given ongoing tensions tied to energy flows and regional stability. Crypto, which has recently shown increased correlation with traditional risk assets, reacted with mild downside pressure.
Bitcoin hoveres around $75,000, holding key psychological support despite the broader risk-off tone. Ethereum trades near $2,300, while total crypto market capitalization slipped toward $2.53 trillion.

DeFi Shock Amplifies Pressure
At the same time, a major disruption in decentralized finance added a second layer of stress.
Aave, one of the largest lending protocols, saw its total value locked plunge by approximately $8.45 billion in just 48 hours – the largest single-protocol drawdown recorded this year. The platform’s TVL dropped from $26.4 billion to $17.9 billion, accounting for a significant share of the broader DeFi contraction.
Update: Aave's TVL has dropped to $17.947B, down $8.45B over the past 2 days.
The total TVL of all DeFi protocols across all chains has also dropped from $99.497B to $86.286B, a decline of $13.21B.https://t.co/mxLuMwJ8LU https://t.co/p1DRnv5gqj pic.twitter.com/fFyhjhjOLE

The trigger was a high-profile exploit involving Kelp DAO’s rsETH bridge.
Exploit Ripples Through Lending Markets
The attack targeted Kelp DAO’s LayerZero-based infrastructure, where a configuration flaw allowed attackers to extract approximately 116,500 rsETH tokens, valued near $293 million.
Rather than immediately liquidating the assets, the attackers deployed a more strategic approach.
They deposited the stolen rsETH into Aave v3 as collateral and borrowed large amounts of wrapped Ether against it. This maneuver effectively transferred the risk to the lending protocol, creating an estimated $195 million in bad debt exposure.
The move highlights the interconnected nature of DeFi, where vulnerabilities in one protocol can rapidly cascade into others.
Panic Selling Hits AAVE Token
The stress quickly spilled into Aave’s native token. More than 236,000 AAVE tokens – worth roughly $21 million – were sent to Binance in a single surge, according to on-chain data from CryptoQuant. The volume is over 7.5 times higher than the token’s typical monthly average, pointing to a sharp spike in sell pressure.

The sudden inflow to exchanges suggests investors moved quickly to reduce exposure as concerns around protocol solvency and bad debt spread.
Price action reflected the shift, with AAVE underperforming the broader market as traders reacted to the unfolding situation.
Emergency Measures Contain Broader Fallout
In response, Aave and other platforms implemented emergency controls, freezing affected markets and restricting collateral usage to prevent further damage.
While these actions helped stabilize conditions, the incident has raised concerns about systemic risk within the restaking and cross-chain ecosystem – particularly around the use of bridged assets as collateral.

The sharp decline in Aave’s TVL reflects both forced withdrawals and precautionary capital flight as users moved funds to safer positions.
Market Data Signals Controlled Pullback
Despite the dual shock from geopolitics and DeFi, the broader market reaction remains measured.
The Fear & Greed Index held near neutral levels at 52, suggesting that sentiment has cooled but not deteriorated significantly.
Altcoin activity remained subdued, with capital continuing to concentrate in larger assets rather than rotating into higher-risk tokens. The current environment reflects a market caught between resilience and caution.
On one hand, Bitcoin’s ability to hold near $75,000 indicates underlying strength and continued demand. On the other, the scale of the DeFi disruption and geopolitical uncertainty is limiting upside momentum.
For now, traders appear to be reducing risk exposure selectively rather than exiting the market entirely.
Focus Shifts to Stability and Recovery
Looking ahead, attention will center on two key factors: geopolitical developments and DeFi recovery efforts.
Any progress in diplomatic talks could quickly restore risk appetite, while further instability may deepen the current consolidation. At the same time, how protocols manage the fallout from the Kelp DAO exploit will be critical in restoring confidence in decentralized lending markets.
The coming days will determine whether crypto markets resume their upward trajectory – or remain in a holding pattern shaped by external risk and internal vulnerabilities.
