Bitcoin ETFs Draw Nearly $1B as Altcoin Fund Demand Diverges

Bitcoin dominated U.S. crypto ETF demand between August 31 and September 4, attracting $986.7 million in net inflows across five sessions. Ethereum funds added $215.3 million, while XRP and Hyperliquid drew much smaller allocations and Solana ended the period with net redemptions.

Summary:

  • Bitcoin ETFs attracted $986.7 million over five sessions.
  • Ethereum followed with $215.3 million in net inflows.
  • XRP and HYPE funds added $18.96 million and $12.3 million.
  • Solana ETFs recorded a $4.9 million net outflow.

The concentration is particularly notable because Bitcoin remained below $80,000 at the latest market snapshot, indicating that almost $1 billion of ETF demand has so far been absorbed without producing a sustained breakout.

Nearly $1 Billion Flows Into Bitcoin ETFs

Bitcoin ETF flows swung sharply during the week, but institutional demand ultimately finished overwhelmingly positive.

According to data from FarSide Investors, the largest move came on September 3, when the funds attracted $730.8 million in a single session. BlackRock’s IBIT accounted for $454 million of that amount, following two sessions in which the fund had moved from a $201.2 million withdrawal to renewed buying.

From August 31 through September 4:

  • Aug. 31: +$216.7 million
  • Sept. 1: -$236.5 million
  • Sept. 2: +$101.1 million
  • Sept. 3: +$730.8 million
  • Sept. 4: +$174.6 million
  • Five-day net: +$986.7 million

The scale of the inflows contrasts with Bitcoin’s relatively restrained price performance. BTC traded at $79,737.02, up 2.78% over seven days but still below the $80,000 threshold.

Rather than signaling weak institutional interest, the combination points to substantial supply around current levels. New ETF demand is entering the market, but existing holders are providing enough liquidity to prevent the flows from immediately translating into a larger price move.

Ethereum Stays Positive as Solana Slips Into Outflows

Capital outside Bitcoin was considerably more fragmented.

Ethereum remained the clear second choice, accumulating $215.3 million over the five sessions. September 3 accounted for $141.4 million of that total, while the following session slowed to $25.9 million.

The September 4 composition was mixed. BlackRock’s ETHA attracted $57.8 million and ETHB added $16.4 million, while Fidelity’s FETH recorded a $48.3 million withdrawal.

Ethereum ETF flows:

  • Aug. 31: +$87.6 million
  • Sept. 1: +$8.6 million
  • Sept. 2: -$48.2 million
  • Sept. 3: +$141.4 million
  • Sept. 4: +$25.9 million
  • Five-day net: +$215.3 million

XRP also remained positive, although at a much smaller scale. Its ETFs accumulated $18.96 million over the period, according to data from Coinglass.

XRP ETF flows:

  • Aug. 31: +$5.64 million
  • Sept. 1: +$14.38 million
  • Sept. 2: -$7.20 million
  • Sept. 3: +$6.14 million
  • Sept. 4: $0
  • Five-day net: +$18.96 million

Hyperliquid funds recorded $12.3 million in five-day inflows. Most of the demand arrived on September 4, when Bitwise’s BHYP took in $10.5 million.

HYPE ETF flows:

  • Aug. 31: $0
  • Sept. 1: +$1.8 million
  • Sept. 2: $0
  • Sept. 3: $0
  • Sept. 4: +$10.5 million
  • Five-day net: +$12.3 million

Solana was the only tracked asset to finish the period in negative territory. Positive allocations early in the week were erased by withdrawals on September 2 and September 4.

Solana ETF flows:

  • Aug. 31: +$0.9 million
  • Sept. 1: +$8.9 million
  • Sept. 2: -$6.1 million
  • Sept. 3: +$6.4 million
  • Sept. 4: -$5.2 million
  • Five-day net: -$4.9 million

Across the five asset groups, net ETF inflows reached approximately $1.23 billion, with Bitcoin accounting for roughly 80% of the total.

ETF Demand and Crypto Prices Tell Different Stories

The spot market did not follow the same hierarchy as ETF allocations.

Solana illustrates the disconnect particularly well. SOL gained 1.56% over 24 hours to $103.12 even though its ETFs ended the five-session period with net redemptions. Hyperliquid’s $12.3 million inflow coincided with stronger weekly performance, with HYPE up 4.63%.

Bitcoin sits at the other end of the comparison. Almost $1 billion entered its ETFs, yet BTC gained only 2.78% over seven days and remained below $80,000.

ETF creations are only one component of market demand. Existing holder sales, offshore spot activity, derivatives positioning and market-maker inventory can all absorb institutional buying, weakening the immediate relationship between ETF flows and price.

Leverage Drops While Spot Markets Stabilize

The broader crypto market remained modestly positive, with total capitalization at approximately $2.69 trillion, up 0.64%. The Fear & Greed Index stood at 75, keeping sentiment in “Greed.”
Derivatives showed a clearer reduction in risk.

Open interest fell 8.09% to $417.34 billion, while derivatives volume declined 49% to $568.89 billion. Liquidations totaled $130.06 million, including $75.33 million in shorts and $54.72 million in long positions.

Meanwhile, some of the strongest spot moves occurred outside the ETF group. BNB climbed 6.74% to $763.25, while Zcash traded at $1,013.17, extending its seven-day gain to 25.54%.

The contrast separates two sources of crypto demand. Regulated investment products are directing the largest amounts toward Bitcoin, while crypto-native capital continues to produce stronger short-term moves elsewhere in the market.

Bitcoin’s $80,000 Level Will Test the Strength of ETF Demand

The next useful signal is not another isolated daily inflow, but whether Bitcoin can maintain positive ETF demand across several more sessions.

September 3 contributed nearly three-quarters of the five-day Bitcoin total. Continued allocations after that spike would provide stronger evidence that institutional investors are accumulating around $80,000 rather than reacting to a single market event.

Ethereum also needs follow-through after its September 4 inflow slowed to $25.9 million. For Solana, the question is whether improving spot performance can eventually reverse the negative ETF balance. XRP and Hyperliquid remain positive, but their current totals are still too small to establish a comparable institutional trend.

Bitcoin presents the clearest test. Its ETFs absorbed $986.7 million in five sessions while BTC remained below $80,000. If inflows persist and the price stays capped, that would point to substantial supply around current levels. A sustained move through $80,000 alongside continued ETF buying would instead suggest that institutional demand is beginning to overwhelm that supply.
