Bitcoin Miners Stay Defensive as Quantum Risk Debate Intensifies

Bitcoin trades near $77,200 on May 22 as investors continued navigating a fragile consolidation phase shaped by cautious miner behavior, weakening momentum signals and growing discussions surrounding long-term quantum computing risks.

Summary:

  • Bitcoin remained range-bound near $77,000 amid cautious miner activity.
  • Miner reserves continue declining, signaling ongoing supply entering markets.
  • Glassnode estimates 6.04 million BTC may face future quantum exposure risks.

Despite repeated attempts to reclaim higher resistance zones above $78,000, Bitcoin has struggled to establish sustained bullish momentum throughout the week. Technical indicators and on-chain miner activity both suggest the market remains trapped in a broader waiting phase rather than entering a decisive breakout cycle.

At the same time, new blockchain research has revived concerns surrounding Bitcoin’s theoretical exposure to future quantum-computing attacks, particularly among older wallets and heavily reused addresses.

Miners Continue Reducing Reserves

Recent miner data compiled by CryptoQuant suggests Bitcoin miners are still behaving defensively rather than aggressively bullish.

The decline in Binance Pool Miner Reserve balances remains one of the most closely watched signals. Since Binance Pool controls a major share of global Bitcoin hash power, changes in its reserve behavior are often viewed as an early reflection of broader miner psychology.

Current reserve declines imply miners are continuing to release supply into the market, although not at levels typically associated with panic-selling conditions.

The Miner Position Index (MPI) remains below historical stress thresholds and continues trading in negative territory. That indicates miners are not aggressively distributing coins relative to long-term averages.

Instead, analysts describe the current environment as “necessity-based selling” – where miners continue liquidating portions of holdings primarily to manage operational costs rather than because of broader market capitulation fears.

The Puell Multiple reinforces that interpretation.

Remaining below the key 1.0 threshold, the metric suggests miner revenues remain historically compressed even after Bitcoin’s rebound from earlier 2026 lows. While profitability conditions have improved slightly, they remain insufficient to trigger broad accumulation behavior across the mining sector.

Taken together, the three metrics suggest miners remain psychologically undecided.

They are not acting as if Bitcoin has fully bottomed, but they are also not signaling expectations for a major collapse. Historically, similar conditions often emerge during prolonged consolidation periods near cycle transition zones.

Analysts said the current structure points toward continued sideways movement rather than an immediate directional breakout.

Technical Indicators Reflect Market Hesitation

Bitcoin’s short-term price structure continues reflecting that same indecision.

The latest five-minute trading structure shows BTC stabilizing near $77,180 after several failed attempts to sustain momentum above the $78,000 region. Price action throughout the last several sessions has remained highly rotational, with repeated intraday swings but limited follow-through in either direction. Momentum indicators also remain mixed.

The Relative Strength Index (RSI) recently slipped toward 39.5 while remaining below its moving average near 53, suggesting short-term momentum has weakened after repeated rejection attempts higher.

Meanwhile, the MACD histogram remains slightly negative, with the MACD line still trading beneath the signal line. Although bearish momentum has moderated compared to earlier downside phases, technical conditions still point toward exhaustion rather than strong accumulation.

Some analysts noted that as long as Bitcoin remains trapped between the current $76,000–$78,000 range, traders are likely to stay defensive and highly reactive to macro catalysts.

Quantum Computing Concerns Re-Emerge

Alongside the miner discussion, new blockchain analysis from Glassnode has reignited debate around Bitcoin’s long-term exposure to quantum computing threats.

Glassnode bitcoin analysis

Researchers estimate that approximately 6.04 million BTC – worth roughly $469 billion at current prices – could theoretically face future quantum-related attack risks because their public keys are already visible on-chain.

That represents roughly 30.2% of Bitcoin’s issued supply.

The remaining 13.99 million BTC, or approximately 69.8% of supply, currently shows no public-key exposure under the “at-rest” quantum risk model.

The concern centers around how Bitcoin cryptography works.

Bitcoin ownership relies on private keys paired with public keys used to validate signatures on the network. Under traditional computing assumptions, deriving a private key from a public key remains computationally infeasible.

However, researchers have long warned that sufficiently advanced quantum computers running Shor’s algorithm could theoretically reverse-engineer private keys from exposed public keys.

Under that framework, the key question becomes whether a wallet’s public key has already been revealed on-chain.

If the public key remains hidden behind an unused address hash, the coins are generally considered protected under current quantum risk assumptions. If the public key has already been exposed, the wallet could theoretically become vulnerable in a future quantum attack environment.

Structural vs. Operational Exposure

Glassnode’s research separates Bitcoin’s quantum exposure into two categories: structural exposure and operational exposure.
Structural exposure accounts for roughly 1.92 million BTC, or 9.6% of issued supply. These are outputs where the underlying script structure reveals the public key by design.

The larger category is operational exposure, which totals around 4.12 million BTC, or 20.6% of supply.

Operational exposure primarily comes from repeated address reuse, partial spending behavior and custodial wallet management practices that unintentionally expose public keys while funds remain tied to those addresses.

Exchange wallets represent one of the largest exposure clusters.

According to the research, exchange-related balances alone account for approximately 1.63 million BTC, or roughly 8.1% of total issued supply.

Researchers emphasized the analysis does not imply any immediate solvency or security threat to custodians, nor does it assume practical quantum attacks are currently possible.

Instead, the report is intended as a framework for understanding where public-key exposure already exists and how improved wallet hygiene, address rotation and custody practices could significantly reduce future risk profiles.

Market Watches for Next Major Catalyst

For now, Bitcoin’s near-term direction appears increasingly tied to whether macroeconomic conditions improve enough to restore stronger institutional risk appetite.

Miner activity suggests ongoing caution. Technical structures remain neutral-to-weak. At the same time, longer-term infrastructure debates – including quantum resilience – are becoming increasingly important as institutional adoption expands.

Analysts said Bitcoin currently appears caught between two competing forces: short-term market exhaustion and long-term structural confidence in the asset’s role as global digital collateral.

Until a stronger catalyst emerges, the market may continue drifting through a volatile but broadly sideways consolidation phase.
