Bitcoin Surges Past $76,000 as Crypto Market Extends Its Rally

Bitcoin trades above $76,000 on August 21 after extending a rapid advance from the $64,000 area, pushing the cryptocurrency market deeper into a broad risk-on move.
Summary:
- Bitcoin extended its breakout above $76,000 while the broader crypto market continued to gain.
- Ethereum, XRP, Solana and several other large-cap assets participated in the advance.
- CryptoQuant identified an MVRV pattern previously seen as major Bitcoin downturns ended.
- Short-term momentum has become heavily stretched after BTC gained more than 20% in a week.
The latest rally has lifted Bitcoin’s market capitalization above $1.5 trillion and strengthened momentum across major altcoins, while fresh CryptoQuant data suggests the recovery is also beginning to appear in Bitcoin’s on-chain valuation structure.
Bitcoin Leads a Rally That Is Spreading Across the Crypto Market
Bitcoin was trading around $76,308, having gained 9.6% over 24 hours and 21.03% over seven days, according to the latest market snapshot. Its capitalization reached approximately $1.53 trillion.
The move has not remained concentrated in BTC. Ethereum changed hands near $2,381, up 5.81% over 24 hours and 26.93% for the week. XRP was among the strongest large-cap performers, gaining 18.9% in a day and more than 31% over seven days.
Solana traded near $90.52, while Dogecoin reached approximately $0.0839 after an 11.79% daily advance. Zcash gained almost 10% over the same period. Hyperliquid’s HYPE was comparatively subdued on the day, but remained almost 30% higher over seven days.
Market capitalization climbed to roughly $2.56 trillion.
That breadth changes the character of the move. Bitcoin initially provided the directional impulse, but capital has since spread into assets with very different market structures and liquidity profiles. XRP’s outperformance and the simultaneous strength in ETH, DOGE and ZEC indicate that traders are accepting more risk rather than concentrating exclusively in the most liquid cryptocurrency.
Sentiment has adjusted quickly as a result. The CoinMarketCap’s Fear & Greed Index reached 71, firmly inside the “Greed” range.
Liquidations Accelerated the Breakout, but Cannot Sustain It Alone
The speed of Bitcoin’s advance also reflects positioning in derivatives markets.
Twenty-four-hour cryptocurrency liquidations stood around $1.41 billion in the latest market data from Coinglass. Earlier stages of the rally produced particularly heavy losses among short sellers as BTC broke rapidly through levels that had capped price for weeks.
Liquidations matter because leveraged short positions do not simply disappear when their risk limits are breached. Exchanges close them by buying back the underlying exposure, adding demand precisely when prices are already rising.
That mechanism can turn an ordinary breakout into a much faster move.
It also creates an analytical problem once the forced buying ends. If Bitcoin remains above the breakout area after short exposure has been cleared, the market increasingly needs genuine spot buyers and new directional positioning to maintain the advance.
The behavior around $74,000 to $76,000 is therefore more informative than the initial jump from the mid-$60,000s. Holding the higher range would indicate that buyers are accepting Bitcoin at materially higher prices rather than relying predominantly on forced short covering.
CryptoQuant Finds a Familiar Pattern in Bitcoin’s MVRV Ratio
The strongest longer-term evidence supplied by the latest data comes from Bitcoin’s MVRV ratio.
CryptoQuant highlighted the indicator after it recovered to approximately 1.3, with analyst DanCoinInvestor describing the move as the first powerful signal of the current cycle and comparing it with transitions seen near the end of previous Bitcoin downturns.

The significance is not the 1.3 reading by itself. It is where the recovery began.
MVRV compares Bitcoin’s current market valuation with realized value, which reflects the aggregate price at which coins last moved on-chain. Readings around 1 therefore represent an important boundary between a market trading near the network’s aggregate cost basis and one where holders, collectively, carry more substantial unrealized profits.
CryptoQuant’s historical chart shows comparable recoveries around the 2015-2016, 2019-2020 and 2022-2023 transition periods.
Those episodes occurred after MVRV had spent time around, or temporarily below, the 1.0 region.

The current pattern has similarities. Bitcoin’s MVRV declined sharply during the previous contraction before turning higher, and its latest move has carried it farther from the zone associated with broad market stress.
Historical similarity is not proof that the same cycle path will repeat. The composition of Bitcoin demand has changed considerably, particularly following the expansion of regulated investment products and institutional ownership. MVRV is better treated as evidence that holder profitability is improving than as a standalone timing signal.
Why MVRV Adds Information the Price Chart Cannot
Bitcoin’s rise above $76,000 already tells traders that demand has overwhelmed available supply at lower prices. MVRV addresses a different issue: what the rally is doing to the economic position of existing holders.
As market value rises relative to realized value, a larger portion of Bitcoin supply moves into unrealized profit. Investors who accumulated during weaker market conditions consequently face less pressure to sell simply to recover their cost basis.
That can affect the supply side of the market.
A sustained MVRV recovery can coincide with a transition from distressed selling toward profit management, where holders decide when higher prices justify realizing gains. The distinction matters because the latter environment generally produces a different market structure from one dominated by underwater investors trying to exit positions.
At approximately 1.3, MVRV also remains well below the extreme readings visible around previous major Bitcoin market peaks in CryptoQuant’s historical chart.
The on-chain signal therefore does not currently resemble the valuation conditions associated with those historical euphoric phases.
Instead, it resembles an earlier stage in which market value is rebuilding its premium over realized value.
Bitcoin’s Four-Hour Chart Is Far More Extended Than MVRV
The short-term technical picture requires considerably more caution.
Bitcoin’s chart showed price around $76,305 after reaching an intraday high of approximately $76,869. BTC has advanced from roughly $64,000 since August 19, with several large bullish candles leaving relatively little consolidation between the old range and current prices.

RSI reached approximately 93.7, while its moving average stood near 81.8.
Such a reading does not automatically imply that Bitcoin must reverse. Strong directional markets can remain overbought longer than conventional thresholds would suggest. It does, however, indicate that price has moved exceptionally quickly relative to its recent trading history.
MACD still supports the bullish momentum. The MACD line was approximately 2,789, above a signal line near 1,970, while the histogram expanded to roughly 819.
The indicators are therefore not producing a confirmed reversal signal. They are showing a strong trend that has become increasingly extended.
A consolidation would change that setup without necessarily damaging the larger breakout. Several levels now matter:
- $76,900-$78,000 is the immediate resistance zone following the latest high and the next psychological area above current prices.
- $74,000-$75,000 represents the first region where buyers could attempt to establish a higher short-term base.
- $72,000 has become an important breakout reference after Bitcoin accelerated through it during the latest leg.
- $70,000 is both a psychological level and a clearer test of whether the market can preserve the structure created by the rally.
- $68,000-$69,000 marks the area surrounding the first major expansion after BTC escaped its previous range.
The distance between spot price and those lower support areas is itself useful information. Bitcoin has risen so rapidly that its nearest established technical structure sits several percentage points below the market.
Ethereum and XRP Show That Risk Appetite Has Broadened
Bitcoin’s strength becomes more consequential for the broader market when capital begins moving into other liquid cryptocurrencies.
Ethereum’s 26.93% weekly gain exceeds Bitcoin’s 21.03%, while XRP’s 31.31% rise is stronger still. Solana and Dogecoin are both approximately 20% higher over seven days.
The dispersion is notable. These assets have different catalysts and investor bases, yet they are advancing simultaneously.
That suggests part of the current move is being driven by a broader repricing of crypto exposure rather than an isolated Bitcoin-specific event. The distinction matters because BTC-dominated rallies can leave altcoin liquidity weak even while headline market capitalization rises.
Stablecoin behavior offers another useful reference. USDT remained close to $0.9994 and USDC around $0.9999, showing no obvious pricing disruption despite the scale of liquidations and the rapid expansion in speculative activity.
The market is therefore absorbing unusually large price movements without visible stress in its two largest dollar-linked liquidity instruments.
The Next Test Is Whether Spot Demand Replaces Forced Buying
The immediate question for Bitcoin is no longer whether it can break the range that contained it below $65,000. That breakout has already occurred.
The more useful test is whether the market can construct a new trading range after a move of almost $12,000 without returning quickly toward the original breakout zone.
Derivatives data will be especially relevant. If leverage and open interest rebuild aggressively while Bitcoin remains near $76,000, another crowded positioning structure could form soon after the previous shorts were removed. A slower recovery in leverage accompanied by stable spot prices would represent a different setup.
CryptoQuant’s MVRV signal introduces a second test on a longer horizon. The current recovery becomes more meaningful if the ratio remains comfortably above 1 while realized value gradually rises beneath the market price. A reversal back toward the aggregate cost basis would weaken the comparison with previous cycle transitions.
For now, the four-hour chart and the on-chain data are describing two different parts of the same market. Bitcoin is extremely stretched over the short term, while its broader holder profitability structure is moving farther away from the conditions associated with the preceding downturn.
