Bitcoin: The Mysterious Connection Between a Developer, the CIA and Satoshi Nakamoto

In 2011 Gavin Andresen, a prominent Bitcoin developer, announced that he will be visiting the CIA headquarters, which coincided with the disappearance of Satoshi Nakamoto.

He further disclosed that he would receive a one-time payment of $3,000 to cater to his expenses and time. Gavin clarified that his presentation on Bitcoin would take place during an emerging technologies conference for the US intelligence community, and he was keen on being transparent about it.

Andresen believed that Bitcoin’s goals were to create a better currency, a more competitive and efficient international payment system, and to give people more direct control over their finances.

He did not think any of these goals were incompatible with the government’s goals. However, he was slightly worried that talking about Bitcoin at the CIA would increase the agency’s chances of taking actions that the Bitcoin community would not want them to take.

Despite his concerns, Andresen believed that accepting the invitation and being open about what Bitcoin is would make it less likely for the CIA to view Bitcoin as a threat.

Additionally, in May 2016, Andresen’s authorization to commit to GitHub’s Bitcoin Core was revoked. This came after publicly supporting Craig Wright’s assertions that he was Satoshi Nakamoto.

However, Andresen subsequently acknowledged his mistake in participating in the “who is Satoshi” speculation and confessed to trusting Craig Wright erroneously in a footnote to his initial statements.

It’s worth noting that Satoshi Nakamoto has not made any public remarks since vanishing in 2011, apart from assertions made by Craig Wright.
