BlackRock Takes Portfolio Strategies Onchain With Ondo

BlackRock is extending tokenization from individual securities to portfolio construction.
Summary:
- Three BlackRock-designed strategies are launching through Ondo Intelligent Portfolios.
- Each token represents a managed allocation, rather than a single stock or ETF.
- The tokens can move 24/7 and potentially serve as collateral across DeFi.
Three investment strategies developed by the asset manager are being turned into onchain products by Ondo Finance, packaging stock, bond and Bitcoin ETF exposure into single transferable tokens that eligible non-U.S. investors can access around the clock.
The structure marks a notable step beyond simply creating blockchain versions of traditional securities. BlackRock provides the investment models, while Ondo handles implementation, tokenization and scheduled rebalancing. The result is an onchain wrapper around an entire investment strategy.
BlackRock Provides the Strategy, Ondo Builds the Product
The initial lineup consists of Ondo High Income Powered by BlackRock, Ondo Diversified Growth Powered by BlackRock and Ondo High Growth Powered by BlackRock.
The distinction between the two companies’ roles is important.
These are not BlackRock ETFs newly issued on a blockchain. BlackRock developed the portfolio strategies for Ondo, while Ondo determines how those strategies are implemented within its products and manages their operation.
The underlying exposure comes through Ondo Stocks, which provides tokenized versions of traditional equities and ETFs backed by securities held through conventional financial infrastructure.
Instead of purchasing and managing each component individually, an investor receives a single portfolio token representing the underlying allocation.
The First BlackRock-Powered Portfolios
Ondo says the portfolios launch with predetermined holdings and target weights, while allocation, fee and rebalancing logic can be executed through smart contracts.
That turns the blockchain token into more than a digital receipt for an underlying security. It represents a rules-based portfolio whose composition can be managed without requiring the investor to rebalance every position separately.
The Portfolio Can Travel After It Is Bought
The more unusual feature appears after acquisition.
Traditional managed portfolios tend to remain inside the brokerage, advisory or wealth-management account where they were assembled. Their individual components may be transferable, but the portfolio itself is not normally a portable financial instrument.
Ondo’s structure makes the entire allocation transferable as one token.
The company says Intelligent Portfolio tokens could be used as collateral for DeFi lending or perpetual positions, deposited into yield products or even incorporated into other portfolio strategies.
That creates the possibility of keeping capital invested while using the token representing that investment elsewhere.
The economics, however, will depend on what happens beyond Ondo’s platform. Lending protocols must be willing to accept the tokens, establish collateral values and provide sufficient liquidity for borrowers to enter and exit positions.
A transferable portfolio therefore has potential utility that a conventional model portfolio lacks, but its real capital efficiency will depend on adoption by the financial applications surrounding it.
24/7 Tokens Still Depend on Markets That Close
The products also expose one of the central tensions in tokenized finance.
Ondo offers 24/7 access and peer-to-peer transfers outside restricted jurisdictions. Blockchain infrastructure does not close on Friday afternoon.
Many of the assets backing these tokens do.
U.S. equities and ETFs continue to rely on traditional exchanges and market makers for their deepest liquidity and price discovery. A token can therefore remain transferable while the market for its underlying security is closed.

That distinction becomes especially relevant during periods of volatility. Continuous access is most useful when investors can transact at reliable prices, not simply when a blockchain remains technically available.
Ondo has already been working to narrow that gap. Its stock platform expanded selected assets to 24/7 minting and redemption, including weekends and U.S. holidays.
Intelligent Portfolios raise the difficulty because one token can contain several underlying exposures, each potentially carrying different liquidity characteristics.
For investors, the important metric will not simply be whether a portfolio can move at 3 a.m. on Sunday. It will be the quality of the liquidity available when it does.
A $365 Billion Derivatives Market Shows Where Demand Is Building
The launch comes as blockchain-based exposure to traditional markets is expanding far beyond tokenized securities.
CryptoRank estimates that RWA perpetual trading across decentralized exchanges reached $365 billion in Q3 2026, up 32% from $277 billion in the previous quarter. Public-equity contracts generated approximately $175 billion, accounting for nearly 48% of the quarter’s total.

That figure should not be compared directly with the value of assets held through Ondo.
RWA perpetuals are derivatives. They provide synthetic exposure and can repeatedly generate notional trading volume as positions are opened and closed. Ondo’s products are instead built around tokens backed by traditional securities.
The useful comparison is behavioral.
Traders are already showing substantial demand for stock, index, commodity and other traditional-market exposure through blockchain infrastructure. CryptoRank’s data suggests equities have become the largest segment of that derivatives activity.
Ondo is testing whether a similar appetite exists for the ownership and portfolio-management side of the market.
The two models serve different purposes. Perpetual DEXs optimize for trading, leverage and short exposure. Asset-backed tokens can support ownership, portfolio construction and collateralization.
BlackRock’s strategies move the second category into territory that previously belonged largely to brokerage and wealth-management platforms.
The Next Test Is Capital Efficiency
The success of the launch will be easier to judge through usage than through the number of tokens issued.
If Intelligent Portfolios remain primarily a different wrapper for conventional investments, their advantage will center on distribution, transferability and extended access.
The more consequential case emerges if other financial applications begin treating them as productive collateral.
An investor could theoretically maintain exposure to a diversified portfolio while borrowing against the portfolio token rather than selling the underlying investment. Smart contracts could then connect portfolio management, collateral and lending without requiring each asset to be moved separately.
But that model introduces measurable constraints.
Collateral haircuts will determine how much borrowing power the tokens actually provide. Secondary-market depth will influence liquidation risk. Lending integrations will show whether DeFi protocols consider the products useful enough to support. Liquidity outside traditional trading hours will determine how much value 24/7 access provides in practice.
Those are better adoption metrics than simply counting tokenized securities.
BlackRock and Ondo have already answered the technical question of whether an investment strategy can be packaged into an onchain instrument.
The economic question comes next: can that portfolio do something materially more useful once it is onchain than it could inside a conventional investment account?
If collateral usage, lending liquidity and secondary-market activity begin to build around these products, the answer will become measurable.
