BRICS Summit: Putin’s Absence Sparks Expansion Concerns
Despite being a prominent leader within the BRICS bloc, Russian President Vladimir Putin will not physically attend the upcoming BRICS Summit scheduled for this month.
His absence at the summit is due to concerns surrounding an ICC warrant, which would have compelled South Africa to arrest him had he attended.
This ongoing issue has raised concerns about potential future disputes among BRICS nations, particularly related to the bloc’s expansion, as mentioned by The Kremlin. There are hints of possible disagreements over the speed of the BRICS Bloc’s growth.
In the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, South Africa has refrained from making any public statements about the matter. Putin’s involvement in controversies is not new, and further controversies are expected to arise during his tenure as a BRICS member.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov emphasized the significance of the topic as an increasing number of countries express interest in joining BRICS. This interest reflects the association’s potential, growing authority, and practical importance.

Most BRICS nations are supportive of the idea of expansion, except for Russia, which has yet to publicly declare its stance. The discussion on expansion and BRICS Currency will be among the key topics at the summit. It is crucial to reach a consensus among the member countries to allow new nations to join BRICS.
While explicit disagreements have not been evident, the consensus required for expansion might not have been reached yet.
Additionally, the legal issues faced by Putin and the ongoing war in Ukraine add complexities and may contribute to further disagreements within BRICS. Observers will closely monitor how BRICS nations interact with Russia and vice versa, as well as Russia’s engagement with potential BRICS+ nations during the summit and the months ahead.
