Chinese AI Models Closing Gap with U.S., Says Expert
According to Kai-Fu Lee, former president of Google China, Chinese AI models currently lag about six months behind their American counterparts but may soon surpass them in adoption.
Lee, who heads startup 01.AI and venture capital firm Sinovation Ventures, noted that while Chinese models are roughly 15 months behind, the leading large language models (LLMs) from Chinese firms are now just six to nine months behind those in the US.
Lee spoke at the AVCJ Private Equity Forum in China on September 11, highlighting that the rapid reduction in the cost of training AI models could boost the adoption of AI apps in China. He anticipates that by early next year, the proliferation of AI apps in China might outpace that in the US. However, he noted that it remains uncertain whether these apps will come from smaller startups or larger corporations.

Lee also discussed the future of AI technology, predicting that developing advanced AI capabilities into “super apps” could take five to eight years. He emphasized the need for new types of devices that are always on and always listening, contrasting with the capabilities of current smartphones. This view aligns with the recent introduction of the “Friend” necklace, an AI-powered wearable designed to provide constant interaction.
In China, major tech companies like Alibaba and Tencent are heavily investing in AI. Tencent launched its own large language model, “Hunyuan,” in September last year, which has since been integrated into various parts of the company’s operations, including cloud computing, marketing, and gaming.
