Coinbase Launches US Stock Trading for UK Users in Major Expansion

Coinbase Launches US Stock Trading for UK Users in Major Expansion

Coinbase launched US stock trading for eligible UK customers on August 6, giving users access to nearly 4,000 equities alongside their cryptocurrency and cash balances in the same application.

Summary:

  • Eligible UK users can trade nearly 4,000 US stocks through Coinbase.
  • The service supports regular, pre-market, after-hours and overnight sessions.
  • Securities accounts remain legally separate from Coinbase’s crypto services.
  • Extended-hours access brings additional liquidity, pricing and currency risks.

The launch makes Coinbase the first crypto-native trading platform to introduce US shares directly to UK users and advances its attempt to compete with multi-asset brokers rather than remain focused exclusively on digital assets.

Coinbase brings stocks and crypto into one interface

The new service allows eligible customers to move between cryptocurrencies, fiat balances and US-listed equities without opening a separate brokerage application. Coinbase describes the launch as part of a broader strategy to consolidate different asset classes within one financial platform.

For UK investors, the immediate attraction is operational simplicity. A user who already holds Bitcoin, Ether or cash through Coinbase can now access thousands of US shares through the same front end, reducing the need to maintain separate applications for digital assets and conventional securities.

The products remain legally distinct beneath that shared interface. Securities are offered through Coinbase Capital Markets Corp., a broker-dealer registered with FINRA and a member of the Securities Investor Protection Corporation. Coinbase states that execution, clearing and custody are provided by Apex Clearing Corporation, while its cryptocurrency services operate through separate entities.

That separation determines which protections apply. SIPC coverage relates to eligible securities and cash held through the brokerage business under applicable rules, but it does not cover digital assets or cash maintained in a Coinbase crypto account. A unified app therefore does not mean that every asset receives the same regulatory or custody treatment.

How Coinbase’s 24/5 stock trading works

Coinbase markets the service as offering stock trading 24 hours a day, five days a week, but US equities still follow defined trading sessions and market closures.

The weekly schedule begins at 4:00 a.m. Eastern Time on Monday and ends at 7:44:30 p.m. on Friday. Trading is divided into pre-market, regular, after-market and overnight sessions.

Trading Session Hours (ET) Purpose
Pre-Market 4:00 AM – 9:30 AM Trading before the primary US session begins.
Regular Market 9:30 AM – 4:00 PM Highest liquidity and normal exchange trading.
After-Hours 4:00 PM – 7:44:30 PM Trading after the closing bell.
Overnight 8:00 PM – 4:00 AM Eligible stocks remain available until the next session.

The advertised 24/5 access should not be interpreted as completely uninterrupted trading. Coinbase’s published schedule includes a short break between the end of the after-market session at 7:44:30 p.m. and the start of overnight trading at 8:00 p.m. ET. Availability may also vary by security.

US stocks remain unavailable during weekends and American market holidays. The calendar includes full closures for dates such as New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Thanksgiving and Christmas, as well as early closes around Independence Day, Black Friday and Christmas Eve.

Extended hours improve access but not necessarily execution

Longer trading hours allow UK investors to respond to earnings releases, economic data and company announcements that arrive outside the regular US session.

The benefit is particularly relevant because the primary New York trading day runs into the evening in the UK. Overnight access gives users an additional window after the conventional session closes, bringing equity availability closer to the continuous experience associated with crypto markets.

Execution quality can differ substantially outside regular hours. Coinbase warns that extended sessions may have lower liquidity and wider bid-ask spreads, which can increase the difference between the displayed price and the level at which an order executes.

A share may also react sharply to a small order when fewer buyers and sellers are present. Prices formed overnight can diverge from those established when the main US exchanges reopen, especially following earnings announcements or major economic releases.

Limit orders become more important under those conditions because they allow investors to specify the highest price they will pay or the lowest price they will accept. Coinbase supports order instructions that can apply only during regular hours or extend across the broader trading day.

UK investors also assume dollar exposure

Buying US equities introduces a second source of risk for customers whose finances are denominated in pounds.
A stock can appreciate in US dollar terms while producing a weaker return in sterling if the dollar falls against the pound. The reverse can also occur, with currency movements increasing the sterling value of an otherwise flat investment.

The combined app may make switching between crypto and equities easier, but those assets operate under different market structures. Cryptocurrency trades continuously, while stocks have defined sessions, holiday closures and corporate actions. Equity ownership can also involve dividends, voting rights and tax reporting that do not apply in the same way to digital tokens.

Market Closures Weekends & US holidays None
Custody Apex Clearing Coinbase digital asset infrastructure

Why Coinbase is moving beyond cryptocurrency

The UK launch supports Coinbase’s effort to evolve from a cryptocurrency exchange into a broader trading and financial-services platform.

Crypto trading revenue can fluctuate sharply with token prices, volatility and retail participation. Adding equities gives Coinbase access to a much larger and more established asset class while increasing the number of reasons customers may keep funds on its platform.

The strategy also places Coinbase in more direct competition with digital brokers that already combine stocks, funds and cryptocurrency products. Its advantage is an existing base of crypto users, while traditional brokers may offer more developed research tools, account types and investment products.

Coinbase has spent several years expanding its regulatory footprint. It obtained a MiCA license from Luxembourg’s financial regulator in June 2025, enabling regulated crypto services across the European Union, and has highlighted separate investment-services authorization in the UK. MiCA itself does not regulate UK securities trading because Britain is outside the EU and the framework applies to crypto assets rather than conventional shares.

The distinction matters because the stock launch should not be presented as a direct product of Coinbase’s MiCA approval. The service depends on the brokerage and clearing structure supporting securities, while MiCA strengthens the company’s broader European crypto position.

What changes next for Coinbase and UK brokers

Coinbase must now show that users who arrived for crypto will also trade conventional assets through the platform. Product range alone will not determine adoption. Execution quality, foreign-exchange costs, order reliability and the clarity of tax and custody information will influence whether customers treat Coinbase as a primary brokerage account.

For competing platforms, the launch increases pressure to provide longer trading hours and a more unified asset experience. Crypto-native firms are entering securities, while conventional brokers continue adding digital assets and tokenized products.

Investors should watch whether Coinbase expands beyond direct US share dealing into funds, recurring investment tools or additional account structures for UK customers. The company will also need to clarify how many of the nearly 4,000 securities support overnight trading, since Coinbase states that extended-hours access applies only to eligible symbols.

The next practical test will come during a major US earnings release outside regular hours. Trading data from those sessions will indicate whether Coinbase can provide sufficient liquidity and stable execution when UK customers are most likely to use the platform’s extended-hours advantage.
