Crypto Markets Remain Under Pressure Despite Iran Ceasefire Deal and Fed Hold

Cryptocurrency markets traded lower on June 18 despite easing geopolitical tensions after the United States and Iran signed a preliminary agreement aimed at ending hostilities and reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

Summary:

  • Bitcoin traded near $64,400, down 1.6% over the past 24 hours.
  • Ethereum fell 2% on the day but remained up more than 5% over the past week.
  • Nearly $485 million in leveraged crypto positions were liquidated in 24 hours.
  • The Federal Reserve held rates steady while warning inflation remains elevated.

Investors also digested a hawkish Federal Reserve decision that reinforced expectations for restrictive monetary policy even as economic growth slows.

Markets Weigh Ceasefire Progress Against Hawkish Fed Outlook

According to information from the BBC, global risk sentiment has improved following the signing of an initial framework agreement by U.S. President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. This memorandum of understanding is designed to halt the ongoing conflict and initiate formal negotiations toward a broader, lasting settlement.

The agreement includes reopening the Strait of Hormuz, the removal of U.S. sanctions on Iran and a proposed $300 billion reconstruction initiative. While the announcement reduced immediate geopolitical concerns, it failed to trigger a sustained rally across cryptocurrencies.

Bitcoin trades near $64,367, down 1.6% over the previous 24 hours. Ethereum changed hands around $1,746, while Solana traded near $71.63.

Despite daily declines, several major digital assets continued to post solid weekly gains, including Ethereum (+5.5%), XRP (+5.6%) and Solana (+10.2%).

Hyperliquid’s HYPE remained among the strongest large-cap performers, advancing more than 28% over the past seven days despite a modest pullback during the session.

CRYPTOCURRENCY WEEKLY TREND REASON / CONTEXT
Ethereum (ETH) ▲ Gain (+5.5%) Maintained solid weekly gains despite daily volatility.
XRP ▲ Gain (+5.6%) Showed stability and positive weekly momentum.
Solana (SOL) ▲ Gain (+10.2%) Strong performance among major digital assets this week.
Hyperliquid (HYPE) ▲ Gain (+28%+) Remained a top performer, despite a modest session pullback.

Federal Reserve Signals Rates Could Stay Higher for Longer

The Federal Reserve left its benchmark interest rate unchanged at 3.50%-3.75%, a decision widely expected by financial markets.

However, policymakers delivered a more cautious message through updated economic projections. Officials lowered GDP growth forecasts while maintaining that inflation remains above the central bank’s 2% target. Nine of eighteen policymakers now expect at least one additional rate hike in 2026, while projections suggest inflation may not fully return to target until 2028.

For digital asset markets, the implications remain significant.

Higher-for-longer interest rates typically reduce excess liquidity and increase the opportunity cost of holding speculative assets.

While easing geopolitical risks provided some support, investors remain focused on the prospect of prolonged monetary tightening.

Nearly $485 Million Liquidated as Volatility Persists

Volatility remained elevated across derivatives markets.

Data from Coinglass showed approximately $484.6 million in leveraged positions were liquidated during the past 24 hours. Long positions accounted for roughly $356.4 million of the total, compared with $128.2 million from short sellers.

More than 116,000 traders were liquidated across major exchanges as rapid price swings continued to trigger forced position closures. The largest individual liquidation occurred on a Bitcoin position.

The figures underscore how aggressively traders remain positioned despite ongoing uncertainty surrounding interest rates, inflation and global macroeconomic developments.

Investors Continue Favoring Larger Assets

Broader market indicators suggest investors remain selective rather than embracing a broad-based altcoin rally.

Total cryptocurrency market capitalization stood near $2.21 trillion, while the Fear & Greed Index remained firmly in “Fear” territory at 22. The Altcoin Season Index measured 45 out of 100, indicating capital continues to concentrate in larger and more liquid digital assets.

Bitcoin maintained a market capitalization above $1.29 trillion, while Ethereum held above $210 billion. Smaller-cap cryptocurrencies continued to face persistent selling pressure, reflecting a trend that has dominated much of 2026.

Analysts increasingly describe the current environment as a “flight to quality,” where investors prioritize liquidity, revenue generation and institutional adoption over speculative narratives.

Attention Shifts Back to Liquidity and Monetary Policy

With immediate geopolitical risks easing, investor focus is likely to return to inflation trends, Federal Reserve policy and institutional capital flows.

The combination of lower geopolitical uncertainty and a still-hawkish central bank leaves crypto markets in a delicate position.

While weekly performance across several major assets remains constructive, daily price action suggests investors are not yet prepared to price in a more accommodative policy environment.

For now, Bitcoin remains the market’s primary macro indicator. Future direction will likely depend less on geopolitical headlines and more on whether incoming economic data can support expectations for eventual monetary easing.
