Did HBO’s Documentary About Satoshi Nakamoto Uncover the True Identity of Bitcoin’s Creator?
A highly anticipated HBO documentary claiming to expose the true identity of Bitcoin's creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, recently premiered. But does it really solve one of the biggest enigmas of our time?
The film, titled Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery and directed by Cullen Hoback, generated buzz following the release of its trailer last week. It delves into the origins of Bitcoin and features key individuals involved in its early development, including Adam Back, CEO of Blockstream.
As the documentary unfolds, it narrows its focus on Peter Todd, a Bitcoin Core engineer, suggesting that he could be the elusive Nakamoto. Todd quickly took to social media to refute the implication, stating, “I’ve had my share of attention in life. This might be wilder than anything before.”

Satoshi Nakamoto is the pseudonym used by the author of the Bitcoin whitepaper and is credited with the creation of Bitcoin. Over the years, numerous individuals have been speculated to be Nakamoto, yet no one has definitively proven their identity.
Speculation around Nakamoto’s identity has been intense, with names like Craig Wright, Hal Finney, Charlie Lee, and Adam Back surfacing frequently in discussions. Leading up to the documentary, betting odds fluctuated wildly, initially favoring late cypherpunk Len Sassaman, but later shifting to Nick Szabo, another significant figure in Bitcoin’s early history.
With Nakamoto purportedly holding over a million Bitcoins—out of a maximum supply of 21 million—many are eager to uncover their identity, as any movement in their holdings could significantly impact Bitcoin’s price.
