Dogecoin Fund Falls Short of Scale as Bitwise Retires BWOW

Bitwise is preparing to retire its Dogecoin exchange-traded product BWOW less than 11 months after its debut, offering an early example of how quickly the expanding crypto fund market can separate viable products from those that fail to reach scale.
Summary:
- Bitwise will liquidate its Dogecoin fund BWOW on October 22.
- BWOW held just $721,815 in net assets as of September 8.
- Shareholders can trade on NYSE Arca until October 14.
- The closure comes during a broader reshaping of Bitwise’s ETF lineup.
The asset manager announced the liquidation on September 10, with trading scheduled to end on October 14 and remaining shareholders set to receive cash later that month.
BWOW reached less than $1 million in assets
Bitwise described the closure as part of an effort to optimize its product range as investor needs evolve. The company did not specifically attribute the decision to weak asset gathering, but BWOW’s size provides important commercial context.
The fund held only $721,815 in net assets as of September 8, despite having traded since November 25, 2025. Its official data showed a NAV of $14.44 and a market price of $14.25, equivalent to a 1.29% discount. The product charges an expense ratio of 0.34%.
Performance also worked against asset growth. Through August 30, BWOW had returned -45.37% on a NAV basis since inception, while its cumulative market-price return stood at -45.92%. Those figures largely reflect the underlying exposure to DOGE rather than an active investment strategy.
The fund’s small size matters because exchange-traded products carry recurring administrative, custody, audit, legal and listing expenses regardless of how much investor capital they attract. At 0.34%, an asset base below $1 million generates only a few thousand dollars in annual management fees before those expenses are considered.
Dogecoin recognition did not translate into fund scale
BWOW was designed to give brokerage investors exposure to DOGE without requiring them to purchase and custody the cryptocurrency directly. It holds DOGE and is structured as an exchange-traded product rather than an investment company registered under the Investment Company Act of 1940.
That distinction makes BWOW’s short lifespan useful for assessing the next stage of the crypto fund market.
Asset managers can now package exposure to a much wider range of cryptocurrencies, but availability does not guarantee sustained demand. A token can have substantial recognition and active spot trading while attracting relatively little capital through a regulated brokerage product.
For investors, direct ownership is also a competing route. Someone seeking DOGE exposure can buy the token through a crypto exchange rather than paying an annual fee for an exchange-traded wrapper. The ETP instead appeals to investors who value brokerage access, professional custody and integration with conventional portfolios.
BWOW’s asset level suggests that audience remained limited for this particular product.
Bitwise is pruning more than its Dogecoin offering
The Dogecoin fund is not the only product Bitwise has decided to remove.
Earlier on September 10, the company announced plans to liquidate its Trendwise Ethereum and Treasuries Rotation Strategy ETF, AETH. That fund is scheduled to stop trading on October 2 and liquidate on October 13.
Bitwise also announced the closure of six option-income ETFs in June, including products tied to Coinbase, Strategy, Circle, Ethereum and other crypto-related equities. Those funds were subsequently scheduled for liquidation in August.

The pattern places BWOW within a wider product rationalization rather than making the closure solely a verdict on Dogecoin. Bitwise says it manages more than 70 investment products and had $9 billion in client assets as of June 30.
As crypto investment menus expand, issuers have more reason to concentrate resources on funds that can establish durable assets and trading activity.
What BWOW shareholders need to know
The liquidation leaves current shareholders with a straightforward timetable:
- September 10: Bitwise formally announced the closure.
- October 14: Final expected trading day on NYSE Arca.
- October 15: Creation of new BWOW shares will have ceased before the market opens.
- October 21: NAV will be used to determine the value of remaining positions.
- October 22: Bitwise expects to liquidate the fund and distribute cash to remaining shareholders.
Investors who want to determine when they exit can sell their shares on NYSE Arca through October 14. Those who continue holding BWOW do not need to submit a redemption request. Their positions will automatically be converted into cash based on the October 21 NAV and distributed through their broker or financial intermediary.
That distinction also means shareholders will not receive DOGE when the fund closes. An investment in BWOW represents indirect exposure to the cryptocurrency rather than direct ownership of the tokens held by the fund.
October 14 starts BWOW’s final exit window
BWOW’s closure comes as crypto asset managers face a different challenge from the one that defined the first generation of spot crypto products. The question is increasingly not whether a cryptocurrency can be placed inside an exchange-traded structure, but whether enough investors want that specific exposure through one.
Bitwise’s recent closures suggest issuers are already reassessing that threshold. A broader selection of crypto products gives investors more choice, but it also divides capital across increasingly specialized strategies and assets.
For BWOW shareholders, the next concrete date is October 14. After trading ends, attention shifts from the secondary-market price to the fund’s final NAV calculation on October 21, which will determine the cash received by investors who remain through liquidation.
