Ethereum Co-Founder Advocates for Unified Approach to Balance Decentralization and Cooperation
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin recently highlighted a significant challenge within the Ethereum ecosystem: finding a balance between decentralization and cooperation among its numerous projects.
He underscored the need for a unified approach to avoid fragmentation into incompatible entities.
To address this, Buterin proposed the concept of “Ethereum alignment,” which emphasizes open-source development, reducing centralization, and supporting public goods. He noted the importance of having clear standards for technological and economic alignment, particularly the use of ETH as the main token whenever possible.
Buterin also introduced the idea of “legible alignment,” breaking down alignment into measurable criteria to make it easier for projects to adhere to shared goals. He mentioned platforms like L2beat that assess these metrics, aiming to shift focus from competition to collaboration based on transparent standards.

Ross, a prominent voice in the Ethereum community, raised concerns about the risk of new ERC standards leading to fragmentation. He advocated for the collaborative development of ERCs to maintain coherence within the ecosystem. Buterin agreed, suggesting that involving multiple teams in the early stages of creating new ERCs could help, pointing to the successful teamwork on ERC-7683 as an example.
Ultimately, both Buterin and Ross believe that economic alignment should be prioritized, as it can facilitate cooperation and drive the adoption of shared standards across Ethereum projects.
