Fed Holds Rates Steady as Three Officials Back Hike, Keeping Crypto Markets on Edge

The Federal Reserve left interest rates unchanged on Wednesday but delivered a more divided policy message than markets had anticipated, as three officials voted in favor of raising borrowing costs and Chair Kevin Warsh emphasized that policymakers remain focused on persistent inflation despite keeping rates steady.

Summary:

  • The Federal Reserve kept its benchmark interest rate unchanged at 3.50%-3.75% in a 9-3 vote.
  • Bitcoin traded near $64,000 while broader crypto markets remained range-bound as investors looked beyond the rate decision to the Fed’s policy outlook.
  • Chair Kevin Warsh said the decision reflected a reassessment of economic conditions rather than a policy pause.

Fed Delivers Split Decision

The Federal Open Market Committee voted 9-3 to maintain the federal funds target range at 3.50% to 3.75%, extending its wait-and-see approach while continuing to describe economic activity as expanding at a solid pace.

The statement acknowledged that inflation remains above the central bank’s 2% objective, citing supply shocks – including higher energy prices – as contributors to ongoing price pressures. At the same time, officials said labor market conditions remain resilient, with job gains broadly matching workforce growth and unemployment little changed.

Dissenting from the decision were Beth Hammack, Neel Kashkari and Lorie Logan, who supported an immediate 25-basis-point rate increase, underscoring that concerns over inflation remain divided within the Committee.

Warsh Says This Was Not a Pause

Speaking after the decision, Chair Kevin Warsh rejected the suggestion that policymakers had paused their tightening efforts.

“I wouldn’t characterize what we did as anything like a pause,” Warsh said. “I would characterize what we did as a rigorous review of the economic situation.”

Warsh argued that financial conditions have continued to tighten even without another increase in the policy rate. Treasury yields have climbed since the Fed’s previous meeting, increasing borrowing costs across the economy independently of the central bank’s benchmark rate.

He also defended the Fed’s decision to avoid providing explicit forward guidance, saying policymakers want markets to respond to incoming economic data rather than anticipated policy signals.

Higher Bond Yields Are Doing Part of the Work

Although the Fed left its benchmark rate unchanged, longer-term borrowing costs have continued to rise.

Treasury yields increased from roughly 4.4% after the previous meeting to around 4.6%, briefly moving above 4.7% during the past week. Because many consumer and business loans are tied to Treasury yields rather than directly to the federal funds rate, tighter market conditions have continued to filter through the broader economy.

Warsh said those higher market rates have given policymakers additional confidence that financial conditions remain restrictive enough to help contain inflation without requiring an immediate policy adjustment.

The approach reflects a growing emphasis on allowing market pricing to complement monetary policy instead of relying on forward guidance to shape investor expectations.

Crypto Markets Await Clearer Policy Signals

Digital asset markets showed a muted reaction following the announcement, with investors largely avoiding aggressive positioning as attention shifted to the Fed’s longer-term policy outlook rather than the rate decision itself.

Asset Price 24-Hour Change
Bitcoin (BTC) $64,165 +0.80%
Ethereum (ETH) $1,906 -0.29%
XRP $1.08 +2.35%
Solana (SOL) $73.83 +0.02%
BNB $570.49 +0.24%
Bitcoin remained near $64,000, while Ethereum traded below $1,910, reflecting the broader lack of directional conviction across risk assets. Market participants are now likely to focus on upcoming inflation, employment and growth data for evidence of whether the Fed’s assessment of the economy changes before its next meeting.

Markets Are Now Looking Beyond the Decision

The policy outcome largely matched expectations, but the split vote and Warsh’s comments reinforced that inflation remains the central issue guiding monetary policy.

Rather than signaling the beginning of an easing cycle, the Fed indicated that future decisions will remain dependent on incoming economic data and evolving financial conditions. For cryptocurrency investors, that means macroeconomic releases – including inflation and labor market reports – are likely to remain key drivers of market sentiment in the weeks ahead.
