FTX’s Former CTO Avoids Prison After Assisting in Government’s Investigation

The former chief technology officer (CTO) of FTX, Gary Wang, is avoiding prison after assisting the U.S. government in its investigation into the downfall of the crypto exchange.
Wang, who was responsible for writing the code that enabled FTX’s fraudulent activities under the leadership of Sam Bankman-Fried, has played a crucial role in helping the government uncover evidence of financial misconduct.
According to a Reuters report, Judge Lewis A. Kaplan decided to spare Wang from prison time after he provided key testimony against Bankman-Fried during the trial.

Wang’s cooperation extended beyond his testimony, as he also helped design and develop software tools aimed at detecting financial fraud in both traditional and crypto markets. These tools are now being used by authorities to monitor suspicious activities.
Bankman-Fried, convicted of defrauding investors and misappropriating billions in customer funds, was sentenced to 25 years in prison. Meanwhile, Caroline Ellison, the former CEO of Alameda Research and Bankman-Fried’s ex-girlfriend, received a two-year sentence for her involvement in the scandal.
Wang’s testimony revealed that he had been instructed to write the code that allowed illicit transfers between FTX and its sister company, Alameda Research.
