G7 Officials Spotlight AI Regulation
G7 national officials are scheduled to convene in Japan on May 30th for a meeting to address the challenges presented by generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT.
This gathering follows the establishment of an intergovernmental forum known as the “Hiroshima AI process” by the same group. This forum aims to engage in discussions surrounding the increasing use of AI tools.
In their joint statement subsequent to the meeting, the G7 acknowledged the necessity to promptly evaluate the opportunities and challenges associated with generative AI, which is progressively gaining prominence in various countries and sectors.
Takeaki Matsumoto, Japan’s communications minister, stated that during next week’s meeting, G7 officials would conduct the first working-level AI session to address concerns like intellectual property protection, the spread of misinformation, and the appropriate governance of this technology.
The G7’s initiatives are part of broader endeavors to regulate AI, including significant actions taken by the EU Parliament through the AI Act. In the latest stage of the European AI Act, MEPs voted in favor of increased transparency for AI models similar to ChatGPT.

Matsumoto emphasized that as the current chair of the G7, Japan will lead discussions on the responsible utilization of generative AI technology.
The G7 AI working group collaborates closely with the OECD and the Global Partnership on AI (GPAI) to provide recommendations for heads of state by the end of 2023.
