German Business Sentiment Dips Amid Economic Uncertainty
Business sentiment among German companies turned more pessimistic recently, reflecting concerns over future business conditions amid economic and political uncertainties, as reported in a monthly survey.
The Ifo Institute’s business-climate index for June dropped to 88.6 from 89.3 in May, contrary to expectations of a slight increase to 89.6, according to economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal.
Clemens Fuest, president of the Ifo Institute, highlighted challenges in overcoming economic stagnation, noting that while current economic assessments remained stable, future expectations for the next six months dampened sentiment. The manufacturing and trade sectors particularly felt the decline, although sentiment in services and construction showed slight improvements.

The downward trend in sentiment follows similar reports from purchasing managers’ surveys, indicating worsening conditions in the manufacturing sector. Concerns over rising economic risks, including support for populist movements in recent elections, could further impact Germany’s export-oriented economy in the long term.
Despite these challenges, the Ifo Institute revised its economic growth forecast upward last week to 0.4% for the year, citing a potential modest recovery in private consumption within Europe’s largest economy.
