Here’s How Long It Took to Build the New Satoshi Nakamoto Statue in Switzerland

An intriguing new statue celebrating Bitcoin's mysterious founder, Satoshi Nakamoto, has been unveiled in Lugano, Switzerland.
Crafted by artist Valentina Picozzi, the piece took 18 months of research and three months of building to achieve its unique “disappearing” effect. Designed to only be fully visible from the side, the statue is made from 304 stainless steel and corten blocks, producing an optical illusion that creates a see-through look from certain angles.
Picozzi, an artist and activist with a background in orthodontics, says her goal was to embody Bitcoin culture in art, symbolizing the decentralized nature of Nakamoto’s creation. Placed in front of the historic Villa Ciani, the statue was introduced during the Plan B forum, an annual blockchain event that attracts tech leaders, government officials, and Bitcoin enthusiasts to Lugano.

Lugano’s Mayor, Michele Foletti, who has pushed for blockchain integration in the city, sees the statue as a tribute to the city’s transformation into a Bitcoin-friendly hub. However, its location may change as Parco Ciani undergoes renovations.
This isn’t the first Nakamoto statue—the Hungarian city of Budapest installed one in 2021, created by sculptors Gergely Réka and Tamás Gilly. It depicts Nakamoto in a hoodie with a reflective face, allowing visitors to see themselves and reflect on the collective, anonymous nature of Bitcoin’s creator.
