Hunter Biden’s LAPTOP Token Crashes 95% in Chaotic Debut

Hunter Biden’s LAPTOP memecoin lost about 95% of its value within its first hour of trading Wednesday, plunging from an early print near $200 to roughly $1.63 at the time of writing.
Summary:
- LAPTOP fell from nearly $200 to about $4.36 during its first hour.
- Additional Uniswap liquidity arrived after most of the initial decline had already occurred.
- Only part of the 1 billion-token supply is immediately available to trade.
- Pool depth, circulating supply and holder concentration are now more useful measures than headline valuation.
The most revealing detail came from the order in which liquidity appeared: the official Aerodrome market opened with limited USDC reserves, while a larger Uniswap pool became active only after the token had already fallen more than 95%. The sequence turned LAPTOP’s debut into an extreme example of how price discovery can break down when a newly launched token begins trading before meaningful market depth develops.

Why LAPTOP Briefly Looked Like a $200 Billion Token
LAPTOP launched with a total supply of 1 billion tokens. At an early quoted price approaching $200, multiplying the two produced a fully diluted valuation close to $200 billion.
The calculation was mathematically correct. Its usefulness was another matter.
The official Aerodrome pool contained only about $83,000 in USDC liquidity during early trading. In an automated market maker, price is determined by the balance of assets inside the pool rather than by a deep order book containing thousands of bids and offers.
When reserves are small, a relatively modest trade can materially alter that balance. Early purchases can therefore push the marginal token price sharply higher, even though there is nowhere near enough liquidity for the broader supply to change hands around that level.
This is where fully diluted valuation and liquidity measure fundamentally different things.
FDV asks what the entire token supply would theoretically be worth if every token were valued at the latest price. Liquidity asks a more practical question: how much capital is actually available to absorb trades around that price.
LAPTOP’s opening minutes produced an unusually large gap between the two.
Uniswap Arrived After Price Discovery Had Already Broken Down
The launch sequence adds another layer to the collapse.
That additional liquidity could improve trading conditions from that point onward, but it could not repair the market in which the original price had been established.
By the time deeper liquidity arrived, early sellers had already pushed LAPTOP through most of its first-hour decline.
The distinction is important because combining the liquidity visible across venues later in the session can give the impression that the same depth existed when LAPTOP was trading near $200. It did not.
The token effectively experienced its most violent period of price discovery in its least liquid state.
That chronology is more informative than comparing the token’s peak and current valuations in isolation.
A $5 Billion FDV Still Needs Context
At roughly $4 to $5 per token, LAPTOP can still display a fully diluted valuation around $5 billion.
That number should not be read like the market capitalization of a mature, liquid cryptocurrency.
For an established asset trading across numerous exchanges, deep order books can make the quoted price reasonably representative for substantial amounts of capital. A new memecoin concentrated in a handful of liquidity pools can behave very differently.
Selling pressure equivalent to a relatively small fraction of the displayed valuation can still produce substantial price movement.
For anyone assessing LAPTOP after its initial crash, the more informative comparison is therefore between trading volume and available liquidity, rather than between its FDV and those of larger crypto assets.
Improving liquidity would not guarantee a higher token price. It would simply make the quoted price harder for individual trades to distort.
The 1 Billion Tokens Are Not All Trading at Once
LAPTOP’s supply distribution adds another reason to separate total supply from the market currently available to traders.
The token launched on Base with 1 billion units. According to the Wall Street Journal, 30% was allocated to founders, including Biden, with those tokens subject to a six-month lock followed by a two-year vesting period. Another 20% was allocated to airdrops, including distributions connected with wallets that lost money trading the TRUMP memecoin.
Up to 30% is connected to a series of predetermined events under a mechanism that can burn tokens when certain outcomes occur.

Portions associated with unmet conditions are intended for charitable purposes. The remaining allocation covers liquidity, exchanges, charity, administration and related project needs.
The result is a distinction between maximum supply and effective circulating supply.
That distinction matters most during the early stages of a token launch, when only a fraction of the total allocation may actually be competing for the limited capital available in decentralized exchange pools.
Speculation Started Before the Official Token Did
LAPTOP also arrived with an unusually large amount of attention already attached to its name.
Biden’s involvement and the reference to the controversy surrounding his laptop generated substantial interest before the official Base token began trading. Unrelated tokens using the LAPTOP ticker appeared on other networks ahead of the launch, creating additional confusion around which contract represented the actual project.
The official launch subsequently attracted scrutiny from crypto companies and users.
Base emphasized that its network is permissionless and that a token deploying there does not represent an endorsement by the platform. The distinction is relevant for any permissionless blockchain: the ability to create a token on a network says little about whether the network’s developers or affiliated companies support the project.
That pre-launch attention may help explain why traders rushed into the earliest available market, but it does not explain the magnitude of the price movement by itself. The pool structure provides the more direct explanation for why those trades could move LAPTOP so dramatically.
What Matters After a 95% First-Hour Collapse
The next useful measurements for LAPTOP have little to do with recovering its original headline valuation.
Stablecoin reserves across the main pools will show whether market depth is improving. Circulating supply and holder concentration will indicate how much inventory could reach the market. Trading volume relative to liquidity can reveal whether turnover is sustainable or dominated by speculative churn.
Price impact is another useful measure. If increasingly large orders can trade without dramatically moving the market, LAPTOP would be developing deeper price discovery. If relatively small transactions continue producing large swings, the quoted price will remain fragile regardless of the FDV displayed beside it.
The first hour has already demonstrated the difference. LAPTOP did not need hundreds of billions of dollars to reach a $200 billion implied valuation, and it did not need hundreds of billions to erase it.
From here, the depth of the market matters more than the size of the number on the screen.
