IG Europe Taps Bitpanda to Accelerate EU Crypto Expansion

IG Group is leveraging its partnership with Bitpanda to rapidly scale digital asset services across Europe, transforming what initially appeared to be a simple technology integration into a broader institutional expansion strategy tied directly to the European Union’s evolving crypto regulatory framework.
Summary:
- IG Group reported a 21% revenue increase in Q1 2026.
- Bitpanda will provide liquidity and crypto trading infrastructure.
- The partnership positions IG for rapid EU-wide MiCA expansion.
The agreement allows IG Europe to offer cryptocurrency trading infrastructure through Bitpanda’s enterprise backend while maintaining full control over the customer-facing trading experience.
Strong Quarterly Results Fuel Crypto Expansion
The partnership arrives shortly after IG Group reported strong Q1 2026 earnings, driven by elevated market volatility and expanding product demand.
The company generated approximately £339.9 million in quarterly revenue, representing a 21% year-over-year increase and prompting management to raise full-year organic revenue growth guidance to between 10% and 15%.
Digital assets have increasingly contributed to that growth strategy.
IG’s acquisition of Australian crypto exchange Independent Reserve helped the company generate roughly £2.4 million in spot crypto trading revenue during the quarter, compared with only £100,000 during the same period a year earlier.
At the same time, first-time trades across the broader IG platform surged 63% year over year to more than 45,000, reflecting growing retail engagement with multi-asset trading products.
Bitpanda Operates the Infrastructure Layer
Rather than building an internal crypto exchange from scratch, IG Europe chose to integrate Bitpanda Technology Solutions as the core operational backend for digital asset trading.
Under the structure, Bitpanda supplies liquidity routing, market connectivity, pricing infrastructure and real-time trading data while IG maintains the front-end brokerage interface and customer relationships.
Analysts said the arrangement allows IG to rapidly scale crypto capabilities without assuming the operational burden of running a standalone exchange infrastructure stack.
IG Europe Managing Director Esteve Jane said the partnership allows clients to access cryptocurrency markets through a regulated platform they already trust while expanding exposure to additional asset classes.
Meanwhile, Bitpanda Enterprise Global Head Nadeem Ladki described the deal as further validation of Bitpanda’s position as a preferred infrastructure provider for regulated financial institutions entering digital assets.
MiCA Creates Immediate EU Expansion Opportunity
The strategic importance of the partnership is closely tied to Europe’s implementation of the Markets in Crypto-Assets regulation, commonly known as MiCA.
IG Europe already operates under the supervision of Germany’s financial regulator, BaFin.

Because Bitpanda holds MiCA-related regulatory permissions across major European jurisdictions including Germany and Malta, the partnership effectively gives IG a ready-made regulatory pathway for broader expansion throughout the European Union.
Under MiCA’s passporting structure, firms licensed in one EU jurisdiction can scale services across all 27 member states without navigating separate national approval processes.
Analysts said this dramatically lowers expansion friction and creates one of the clearest institutional growth opportunities currently emerging inside Europe’s regulated crypto market.
Bitpanda Strengthens Position Ahead of Potential IPO
For Bitpanda, securing a partnership with IG Group significantly strengthens its institutional profile as the company continues expanding its B2B infrastructure division.
The Vienna-based platform has increasingly positioned itself as the backend crypto engine for traditional European financial firms seeking digital asset capabilities without building internal infrastructure independently.
Bitpanda already provides crypto infrastructure services to institutions including Deutsche Bank, N26 and MultiBank Group.
Industry observers said partnerships with large regulated brokers such as IG Group could materially improve Bitpanda’s enterprise valuation as the company explores a potential future public listing.
Europe’s Crypto Market Moves Into Institutional Phase
The IG-Bitpanda partnership reflects a broader structural shift taking place across European finance.
Rather than treating crypto as a speculative side market, major regulated brokers and banks are increasingly integrating digital assets directly into mainstream trading and investment platforms.
MiCA’s arrival has accelerated that transition by providing a unified regulatory framework capable of supporting large-scale institutional deployment across the European Union.
Analysts said firms that already possess regulatory licenses, established customer bases and scalable infrastructure partnerships may now hold a significant first-mover advantage as Europe’s digital asset market enters a more mature institutional phase.
