Indonesia Cracks Down on Illegal Bitcoin Mining

Indonesia recently made headlines after conducting surprise raids over the Christmas weekend at ten locations suspected of harboring illegal Bitcoin mining setups.

These operations allegedly siphoned electricity from the national grid without authorization, posing a significant challenge for authorities. While Indonesia is increasingly stepping into the cryptocurrency realm, mining hasn’t been a central focus until now. The crackdown sheds light on the criminality of electricity theft in Indonesia, carrying severe penalties of imprisonment for up to five years or a hefty fine amounting to twice the value of the stolen electricity.

The surge in cryptocurrency prices seems to have attracted more individuals to venture into mining, leading to a heightened risk of electricity theft. Similar issues have been faced by neighboring Malaysia, where authorities have apprehended cryptocurrency miners for similar electricity theft offenses. However, the recent raids in Medan, North Sumatra, represent a notable instance of such activities surfacing within Indonesia.

During the raids in Medan, authorities stumbled upon 1,314 Bitcoin mining rigs and detained 26 individuals suspected of involvement in these illicit operations. These suspects allegedly tapped into utility poles owned by the state-owned electricity company, PLN (Perusahaan Listrik Negara), over the past six months, resulting in a staggering loss of approximately 14.4 billion Indonesian rupees ($100,000) for the state.

Though the monetary value might seem modest at first glance, it translates to a substantial 10 million kilowatt-hours at current local energy prices. This usage is equivalent to the yearly energy consumption of about 7,500 individuals in the country, highlighting the significant impact of such illicit operations on the national grid.

In response to this discovery, a representative from PLN has pledged cooperation with authorities to address similar cases in the future. This crackdown underscores the crucial need to curb electricity theft to uphold the stability and reliability of Indonesia’s national power grid.
