Kraken Launches USD-Settled Bitcoin, Ethereum Options for Institutions

Kraken has launched U.S. dollar-settled Bitcoin and Ethereum options, expanding its institutional derivatives offering with products designed to mirror traditional financial markets and lower operational barriers for professional traders.

Summary

  • Kraken introduced cash-settled BTC and ETH options for eligible institutional clients.
  • The contracts are integrated into a unified trading account with portfolio margining.
  • The exchange is initially using an RFQ model before transitioning to an order book.
  • The launch strengthens Kraken’s push into institutional crypto derivatives amid growing competition.

Designed for Institutional Trading

Kraken’s new options contracts are European-style and cash-settled in U.S. dollars, allowing traders to gain or hedge exposure to Bitcoin and Ethereum without posting crypto as collateral or taking delivery of the underlying assets.

Instead, clients can fund positions using more than 30 fiat currencies, bringing the products closer to the structure commonly used across equity, commodity and foreign exchange derivatives.

The exchange said contracts are available with weekly, monthly, quarterly and semi-annual expiries, providing institutions with a wider range of hedging and trading strategies.

Unified Margining Reduces Capital Requirements

A central feature of the launch is integration into Kraken Pro’s unified trading account, where spot, futures and options positions are managed from a single wallet.

That enables automatic portfolio margining, allowing offsetting positions across different products to reduce overall collateral requirements instead of calculating margin separately for each position.

The model reflects practices widely used in traditional derivatives markets, where cross-margining can improve capital efficiency for active trading firms.

Institutional Rollout Comes First

At launch, access is limited to eligible professional and institutional clients through a Request-for-Quote (RFQ) system, where market makers provide customized pricing for larger trades.

Kraken said it plans to introduce a public order book in a later phase, a move intended to improve liquidity and price discovery as participation expands.

The company also expects to extend availability to Europe during the second half of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals.

Competition for Institutional Order Flow Intensifies

The launch adds to growing competition among exchanges seeking to attract institutional derivatives trading.

Coinbase strengthened its position in the segment through its acquisition of Deribit, the world’s largest crypto options exchange, while CME Group continues expanding its regulated crypto derivatives business, including extending trading hours for its options products to weekends.

Kraken’s latest offering builds on its broader expansion into regulated U.S. derivatives markets, including the rollout of perpetual futures earlier this year.

By introducing dollar-settled contracts with unified margining, the exchange is betting that institutional investors will increasingly favor crypto derivatives that resemble the operational and risk-management frameworks they already use across traditional financial markets.

It started in 2016 with Bitcoin. Like most people at the time, he didn't fully understand it - so he kept digging. Blockchain, tokenomics, the projects, the cycles. That curiosity never stopped, and eventually pulled him into traditional markets too: equities, commodities, macro. Not because he left crypto behind, but because you can't properly understand one without the other. What drives him is straightforward: he wants to know why something is happening, not just that it's happening. Most market coverage stops at the headline - price up, price down, here's a chart. Alex finds that kind of reporting actively unhelpful. If you walk away from an article without understanding the mechanism behind the move, what did you actually learn? He holds a degree in Tourism from New Bulgarian University - not the most obvious path into financial markets, but markets have a way of pulling in people who are simply too curious to stay out.
