Bitcoin Holds Near $79K as Options Market Flags $81K-$86K Test

Bitcoin Holds Near $79K as Options Market Flags $81K-$86K Test

Bitcoin was trading near $78,792 on Aug. 27, holding most of its recent recovery even as momentum cooled during the latest session.

Summary:

  • Bitcoin remains above key short-term trend support despite cooling from recent highs.
  • Options pricing suggests traders are not positioning for an uninterrupted continuation higher.
  • Glassnode identifies $81,000-$86,000 as a concentrated resistance and supply zone.
  • A large Friday options expiry could make positioning increasingly important into the end of the week.

The spot market remains constructive, but derivatives positioning presents a less aggressive view: options data cited by Wu Blockchain and attributed to Glassnode places the central range of expected outcomes over the coming month between roughly $69,000 and $89,700.

The difference between spot strength and options pricing matters after Bitcoin’s rapid recovery from its mid-August low. Rather than extrapolating that move into another immediate leg higher, derivatives traders appear to be assigning meaningful probability to consolidation on both sides of the current price.

$81,000-$86,000 Is More Than a Technical Resistance Zone

According to Glassnode analysis shared by Wu Blockchain, several sources of potential selling pressure converge between $81,000 and $86,000. They include long-term holder supply, existing sell orders, dealer gamma positioning and remaining short-liquidation concentrations.

Bitcoin’s late-August squeeze cleared several major liquidation clusters, while substantial liquidity remains concentrated near $76,000 and above $83,000.

That combination makes the area more significant than a resistance level identified from price charts alone.

Bitcoin already consumed substantial liquidation liquidity during its rebound. As short positions were forced out, those liquidations created mechanical buying demand that helped accelerate the move. Once those clusters have been cleared, however, the market needs a different source of demand to sustain the advance.

This changes the character of the next test. A move into $81,000-$86,000 would increasingly depend on fresh spot and derivatives demand being strong enough to absorb existing supply rather than another large wave of forced short covering.

Options Traders Price a Wide Range Around Bitcoin

For the Sept. 25 expiry, Glassnode’s distribution places the middle 70% of implied outcomes between approximately $69,000 and $89,700, with the median close to spot.

That range offers a useful counterweight to the strong performance visible in the underlying market. Bitcoin is still up 12.87% over seven days, while Ethereum has gained 10.14%, Solana 18.08% and XRP 26.87%, according to the market data provided.

The options distribution does not imply that Bitcoin must remain inside those boundaries. Instead, it reflects how traders are pricing uncertainty after a substantial repricing of the asset.

There is another distinction worth making. The upper end of the range sits only modestly above the $81,000-$86,000 supply zone identified by Glassnode, while its lower boundary reaches back toward territory from which Bitcoin recently recovered. Options therefore appear to be assigning risk to both a resistance-driven pullback and another attempt higher rather than heavily favoring either outcome.

Bitcoin Holds Short-Term Support as Momentum Cools

Bitcoin’s four-hour chart has shifted from a strong breakout phase into consolidation, with price now trading around $78,772 after failing to extend above the recent $80,000-$81,000 area.

The most important level is the 20-period SMA at $78,763. BTC is sitting almost directly on that average, making it the immediate short-term pivot. Holding above it would preserve the current consolidation structure, while a decisive break below would increase the risk of a deeper pullback toward the 50-period SMA near $75,800.

The wider trend remains constructive because Bitcoin still trades well above the 200-period SMA at $66,899, and the 50-period average continues to rise. That keeps the broader four-hour structure bullish even though the pace of the advance has slowed.

Momentum is also cooling. The RSI has fallen to 57.55, down from much stronger readings during the recent surge and below its RSI average near 61.68. That suggests buyers no longer have the same short-term momentum they had during the breakout, but conditions are far from oversold.

The recent candles also show repeated hesitation around $79,000-$80,000, while the prior spike above $80,000 failed to hold. This reinforces the importance of the $81,000-$86,000 resistance zone identified by Glassnode. A sustained move back above $80,000 would put that area back into focus, but Bitcoin would likely need stronger spot demand to absorb the supply sitting overhead.

For now, the technical setup is relatively balanced: $78,700-$78,800 is the first support area, $75,800 is the stronger downside level, and $80,000-$81,000 remains the first barrier before the larger $81,000-$86,000 resistance zone.

Friday’s Options Expiry Adds a Near-Term Positioning Test

The more immediate event arrives before the Sept. 25 distribution becomes relevant. The market dashboard points to roughly $6.4 billion in Bitcoin options expiring Friday, creating a sizeable reset in derivatives positioning near the end of the week.

Expiry itself does not determine Bitcoin’s direction, but it can change the exposures dealers need to hedge as contracts disappear and traders establish new positions. That makes the composition of open interest after expiry more useful than the headline notional value alone.

The next set of contracts should also provide a cleaner indication of whether traders begin shifting probability toward a sustained break above $81,000 or continue paying for protection around the lower part of the current implied range. With Bitcoin still trading below Glassnode’s $81,000-$86,000 supply cluster, that repricing could offer an early read on whether derivatives markets are becoming more confident in the rally or remain positioned for a wider consolidation.
