Metaplanet Issues $50 Million in Bonds to Buy Bitcoin as Price Holds Near $78,000

Metaplanet has raised 8 billion yen ($50 million) through a zero-coupon bond issuance, with proceeds set to be used entirely for additional Bitcoin purchases.

Summary:

  • Metaplanet issued $50M in zero-coupon bonds to buy Bitcoin.
  • The firm now holds over 40,000 BTC, ranking third globally.
  • Bitcoin trades near $78,000 as the company continues to accumulate.

Bitcoin is trading near $77,800, moving sideways after failing to reclaim higher resistance levels above $78,500 earlier this week. Price action reflects a period of consolidation, with lower highs forming on short-term charts.

Momentum indicators suggest a neutral-to-bearish bias. The Relative Strength Index sits around the mid-40s, indicating neither overbought nor oversold conditions. Meanwhile, the MACD remains in negative territory, pointing to fading bullish momentum.

Traders are watching support around the $77,000 level. A break below could open the door to further downside, while a push above $78,500 would signal renewed strength.

Metaplanet Doubles Down on Bitcoin Strategy

Against this backdrop, Metaplanet is continuing its aggressive accumulation strategy. The company issued zero-coupon bonds, meaning it will not pay periodic interest, allowing it to deploy capital efficiently into Bitcoin.

The entire issuance was purchased by EVO Fund, a repeat institutional backer. Proceeds are earmarked solely for Bitcoin acquisitions, reinforcing the firm’s “Bitcoin-first” treasury approach.

This marks the company’s 20th bond issuance tied to crypto purchases, underscoring its reliance on debt markets to expand holdings.

Holdings Push Firm Into Global Top Tier

Metaplanet now holds approximately 40,177 BTC, making it the third-largest publicly listed corporate holder of Bitcoin globally.

The company has surpassed several mining firms and established itself as the dominant institutional BTC holder in Asia. Only Strategy and Twenty One Capital currently hold larger positions.

Its accumulation strategy mirrors that of Michael Saylor’s Strategy, using debt financing to build exposure during periods of market consolidation.

Performance Measured in Bitcoin, Not Dollars

Unlike traditional firms, Metaplanet evaluates success using a “BTC Yield” metric, which measures Bitcoin holdings per share rather than fiat returns.

The approach reflects a long-term conviction in Bitcoin’s value. However, it also introduces volatility in reported earnings. The company recorded a $619 million net loss in 2025, largely due to unrealized losses as Bitcoin pulled back from its peak near $126,000.

Despite this, the firm has continued to expand its holdings, prioritizing long-term accumulation over short-term financial performance.

Debt-Fueled Accumulation Continues

The latest bond issuance highlights Metaplanet’s willingness to leverage capital markets to grow its Bitcoin treasury. By issuing zero-interest debt, the company can accumulate assets without immediate financing costs.

This strategy is effective in stable or rising markets but carries risk if prices decline sharply. For now, BTC’s relative stability near $78,000 provides a favorable environment for continued accumulation.

Metaplanet’s trajectory suggests it will remain a key player in corporate Bitcoin adoption, reinforcing the growing trend of companies using balance sheets to gain exposure to digital assets.
