Olympic Venue Among 40 French Museums Targeted in Crypto Ransom Cyberattack

Last weekend, hackers targeted the Grand Palais Museum, an Olympic venue in Paris, along with 39 other French museums.

They demanded a cryptocurrency ransom and threatened to release the financial data if their demands were not met.

On August 3, the Grand Palais’s information systems director detected the breach and notified the French cybersecurity agency, ANSSI. The attackers, whose identity remains unknown, gave a 48-hour deadline for payment in cryptocurrency.

The French Anti-Cybercrime Brigade (BL2C) is investigating the incident, which involves charges of extortion and data processing system attacks. ANSSI reassured that the hack does not impact the systems used for managing the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Despite initial reports, the Louvre Museum has clarified that it was not affected by the breach.
