Onchain RWA Perpetual Volume Tops $120B as Market Expands

Onchain derivatives tied to real-world assets have grown from a niche corner of decentralized finance into a market generating more than $100 billion in monthly trading volume.
Summary:
- RWA perpetual volume increased from $0.8 billion in October 2025 to $123 billion in August 2026.
- Monthly turnover has remained above $100 billion since June, while open interest has reached approximately $4.9 billion.
- TradeXYZ and Variational dominate open positions, but execution remains considerably thinner than in established TradFi derivatives markets.
RWA perpetual volume reached $123 billion in August, after setting a record of $147 billion in July.
The growth is striking, but volume alone does not explain what is happening. Open interest has climbed to roughly $4.9 billion,
TradeXYZ and Variational account for nearly 90% of that total, and new market structures are emerging to connect onchain traders with liquidity originating in traditional finance.
RWA Perpetuals Crossed $100 Billion and Stayed There
The expansion accelerated rapidly after the start of 2026.
Castle Labs’ monthly data shows volume rising from $0.8 billion in October 2025 to $1.8 billion in November and $4.3 billion in December. January brought the first major jump to $22 billion, followed by $33 billion in February and $58 billion in March.

Activity then reached $66 billion in April, $93 billion in May and $118 billion in June. July established the current record at $147 billion before turnover eased to $123 billion in August.
August was therefore down roughly 16% from July’s peak, but the broader trend remained intact. Volume stayed above $100 billion for a third consecutive month and was still more than twice its March level.
DefiLlama Research provides another way to measure the acceleration. RWA perpetual volume expanded from approximately $3.6 billion during the fourth quarter of 2025 to $121.7 billion in the first quarter of 2026, representing roughly 33-fold quarterly growth.
The figures point to sustained expansion across several quarters rather than a single burst of speculative activity.
What Traders Are Actually Buying
The term “RWA perpetual” can be misleading if interpreted as tokenization of the underlying asset.
These contracts provide synthetic price exposure to traditional markets. A trader can take a leveraged position linked to a stock, commodity, equity index or foreign-exchange pair without owning the referenced security or physical asset.
DefiLlama’s RWA perpetual category currently spans a wide range of markets, including:
- Equities: Nvidia, Apple, Alphabet, Robinhood and other listed companies
- Indices: S&P 500 and other traditional market benchmarks
- Commodities: gold, silver, copper and crude oil
- Private-market exposure: contracts referencing companies such as SpaceX
- Foreign exchange: currency-linked markets available through onchain derivatives venues
Crypto-native BTC and ETH perpetuals are excluded from DefiLlama’s RWA category.
That distinction is crucial when interpreting the $123 billion figure. It does not represent $123 billion of stocks, commodities or other assets being tokenized. It measures turnover in derivative contracts whose prices reference those markets.
Nearly $5 Billion Is Staying in Open Positions
Trading volume measures how much activity passes through a market. Open interest measures contracts that remain outstanding, making it a useful second indicator of whether traders are building persistent exposure.
Castle Labs reported approximately $4.9 billion in RWA perpetual open interest, with TradeXYZ and Variational responsible for nearly 90% of the total.
TradeXYZ has emerged as the largest venue by this measure. DefiLlama shows billions of dollars in open interest distributed across markets referencing traditional assets, including the S&P 500, SK hynix, SpaceX, silver and major U.S. equities.

Variational has expanded through a different model. Its RWA offering initially focused on commodities before moving into indices, equities and private-market names. DefiLlama Research reported that its RWA listings jumped from six in May to 53 in June, with more than 119 active RWA perpetual markets by September.
The concentration does create a vulnerability. A market approaching $5 billion in open interest may sound broadly established, but if almost 90% sits on two venues, its liquidity base remains much narrower than the headline total suggests.
Onchain Access Has Not Recreated TradFi Liquidity
This is where the rapid volume growth meets its biggest constraint.
Listing an S&P 500, crude oil or equity perpetual onchain does not automatically import the liquidity available in the underlying traditional market.
DefiLlama Research cited Castle Labs analysis comparing execution in an onchain crude-oil market with CME’s established WTI futures market. A $1 million order was estimated to incur 15.4 basis points of slippage on Hyperliquid versus only 0.79 basis points on CME, a difference of roughly 20 times.
For smaller retail trades, that gap may be less visible. It becomes increasingly important as position size grows.
Traditional futures markets benefit from decades of institutional participation, specialized market makers and deep pools of capital.
An onchain market referencing the same asset has to establish its own liquidity while competing against infrastructure that already handles enormous institutional flows.
That makes execution quality, rather than the number of listed markets, one of the most important tests for the sector.
Variational Is Trying to Import Liquidity Instead
One response is to avoid recreating every traditional order book from scratch.
Variational uses a request-for-quote model, allowing liquidity providers to price trades and hedge exposure through external markets.
This makes it possible to support a wider range of assets without requiring deep standalone onchain liquidity for every contract.
Its newer Swaps product pushes that model further.
According to DefiLlama Research, Swaps can connect trader exposure more directly with traditional-finance dealer liquidity. Instead of relying solely on the funding-rate mechanics commonly used by perpetual futures, the structure can incorporate borrowing costs and external hedging.
That represents a potentially more consequential development than simply adding another stock perpetual.
If onchain platforms can use external dealer markets to improve pricing and depth, the boundary between decentralized trading infrastructure and conventional derivatives liquidity becomes less rigid. Traders retain an onchain interface while some of the economics supporting the position can originate elsewhere.
Volume Has Proven Demand. Liquidity Is the Next Test
The market has already passed its first major test.
Monthly RWA perpetual turnover has remained above $100 billion since June, while nearly $5 billion in open interest indicates that activity is not limited to traders rapidly cycling through positions.
But the next stage will be harder to measure through headline volume alone.
Open interest needs to broaden beyond TradeXYZ and Variational. Large orders need to become cheaper to execute. Liquidity needs to deepen across more of the hundreds of available markets, rather than concentrating in a small number of contracts.
Those indicators will show whether RWA perpetuals are developing into durable financial infrastructure.
The sector’s rise from less than $1 billion in monthly activity in late 2025 to more than $120 billion today has already demonstrated that crypto traders want onchain access to stocks, commodities, indices and other traditional markets. The more important question now is whether the infrastructure underneath those contracts can mature quickly enough to support institutional-size trading without sacrificing the execution quality available offchain.
