Ripple CTO Sees XRPL as Backbone for Tokenized Finance

Ripple Chief Technology Officer Emeritus David Schwartz has outlined a long-term vision for the XRP Ledger (XRPL) that extends well beyond cross-border payments, positioning the network as a foundational layer for the tokenization of traditional financial assets.

Summary:

  • Schwartz sees XRPL as infrastructure for tokenized finance.
  • Ripple is targeting securities, funds, loans and on-chain credit markets.
  • The strategy focuses on institutional adoption beyond payments.

Speaking on the future of blockchain-based finance, Schwartz – widely known in the crypto industry as “JoelKatz” – highlighted tokenized securities, money market funds, repurchase agreements (repos), loans and other real-world assets (RWAs) as key markets that could eventually migrate onto distributed ledger infrastructure.

The vision reflects a broader industry trend as financial institutions increasingly explore how blockchain technology can modernize capital markets by reducing settlement times, improving liquidity and lowering operational costs.

From Payments Network to Financial Infrastructure

While XRP has historically been associated with cross-border payments, Ripple’s strategy increasingly centers on expanding the XRP Ledger’s role as an institutional-grade settlement network capable of supporting a wide range of tokenized financial products.

According to Schwartz, the next phase of blockchain adoption will likely be driven less by speculative trading activity and more by the migration of traditional financial assets onto blockchain rails.

That transition could include tokenized stocks, bonds, money market funds, credit products and short-term funding instruments, creating a unified digital infrastructure where assets can be issued, traded and settled on-chain.

Technical & Competitive Context

While the shift toward real-world asset (RWA) tokenization is an industry-wide trend, the XRP Ledger’s value proposition is uniquely defined by its native architecture. Unlike general-purpose blockchains that require complex smart contracts – which can introduce potential points of failure – the XRPL utilizes a set of “built-in” primitives.

By implementing features like the Decentralized Exchange (DEX) and Multi-Purpose Tokens (MPTs) at the protocol level rather than the application layer, Ripple aims to provide the high-throughput, low-latency environment required for institutional settlement. However, this strategy places the XRPL in direct competition with established enterprise-grade distributed ledgers like R3’s Corda and institutional Layer-2 solutions on Ethereum.

The long-term success of this vision will likely hinge on the network’s ability to balance its decentralized, permissionless roots with the rigorous compliance, privacy, and KYC/AML requirements mandated by global financial regulators.

Bridging Traditional Finance and DeFi

A central component of Schwartz’s thesis is the convergence of traditional finance (TradFi) and decentralized finance (DeFi).

Rather than viewing blockchain as a replacement for existing financial institutions, Ripple has increasingly positioned the technology as an enhancement layer capable of improving the efficiency of legacy systems.

The XRP Ledger already includes several native features designed to support institutional use cases, including a built-in decentralized exchange (DEX), automated market makers (AMMs), escrow functionality and Multi-Purpose Tokens (MPTs), which can facilitate more sophisticated financial arrangements and regulated asset issuance.

Supporters argue these tools could enable financial institutions to automate settlement processes, manage collateral more efficiently and reduce reliance on multiple intermediaries.

Tokenization Moves Toward Institutional Adoption

The focus on tokenization comes as global financial firms accelerate efforts to bring real-world assets onto blockchain networks.

Industry estimates suggest trillions of dollars in securities, funds and fixed-income products could eventually be tokenized over the coming decade, creating new opportunities for liquidity and market accessibility.

For Ripple, initiatives such as the launch of RLUSD and partnerships across the financial sector represent part of a broader effort to build the infrastructure institutions require before committing significant capital to blockchain-based markets.

Utility Remains the Long-Term Thesis

Schwartz has repeatedly argued that the long-term value of blockchain networks will ultimately be determined by utility rather than short-term price movements.

From that perspective, growth in transaction activity, tokenized asset issuance and institutional participation may prove more significant than near-term market volatility.

Whether the XRP Ledger can capture a meaningful share of the emerging tokenized asset market remains uncertain. However, the increasing focus on real-world asset tokenization, on-chain settlement and institutional blockchain adoption suggests the conversation surrounding XRPL is gradually shifting from payments toward broader financial infrastructure.

As global financial markets continue exploring tokenization, Ripple is positioning the XRP Ledger as a platform designed not only to move money, but potentially to support the next generation of digital capital markets.
