Sberbank Advances Crypto Push With December Platform Launch

Russia's largest lender, Sberbank, is preparing to launch a cryptocurrency trading platform and digital asset depository by Dec. 1 as banks position themselves for the country's new regulatory regime governing digital asset
Summary:
- Russia’s new crypto framework is drawing major banks into the digital asset market.
- Sberbank plans to launch trading and custody services before the rules take effect.
- The lender is building infrastructure that could expand regulated access to crypto for retail clients.
Sberbank’s announcement follows legislation scheduled to take effect on Sept. 1 that establishes a legal framework for cryptocurrency trading, custody and related financial services.
The reform represents one of the most significant changes to Russia’s digital asset market in recent years. Rather than leaving crypto activity concentrated among specialized platforms, lawmakers are creating a system where licensed financial institutions can become the primary gateway for retail and institutional investors.
For banks, the legislation opens an entirely new business segment. For customers, it could make digital assets accessible through institutions they already use for payments, savings and investments.
Sberbank Is Building More Than a Trading Platform
Instead of launching a standalone crypto exchange, Sberbank is integrating digital assets into its broader financial ecosystem.
According to information from Interfax, the lender is developing both a cryptocurrency trading platform and a dedicated digital depository that will maintain records of customer ownership while processing much of the operational activity through specialized accounting systems. That approach is designed to simplify settlement, custody and compliance without relying exclusively on public blockchain infrastructure for every transaction.
Once approved by regulators, customers are expected to access the services directly through Sberbank Online and SberInvestments, eliminating the need to open accounts with separate cryptocurrency providers.
The Bank Is Expanding an Existing Digital Asset Strategy
Sberbank is not entering digital assets from scratch, although its previous initiatives focused on Digital Financial Assets (DFAs) rather than cryptocurrencies.
Under Russia’s earlier regulatory framework, the bank issued Bitcoin-linked structured products and participated in a Bitcoin-backed lending pilot with mining company Intelion Data. Those initiatives were conducted within the country’s DFA regime, which governs tokenized financial instruments and other blockchain-based assets issued under Russian law rather than open cryptocurrencies.
The Dec. 1 launch represents a broader step. Instead of offering selected tokenized investment products, Sberbank is preparing infrastructure for regulated cryptocurrency trading and custody under Russia’s new legal framework, bringing services such as crypto wallets and trading into its consumer banking ecosystem.
Why Timing Matters
Sberbank’s accelerated rollout reflects growing competition among Russian financial institutions seeking to establish an early presence in the regulated cryptocurrency market.
Entering before the regulatory framework fully matures could provide several advantages:
- Build custody infrastructure before competitors.
- Attract retail investors through existing banking channels.
- Develop compliant crypto investment products under the new rules.
- Establish relationships with licensed market participants as the ecosystem expands.
Launching before the end of the year would position Sberbank among the first traditional Russian lenders capable of offering integrated cryptocurrency services at scale.
Crypto Is Becoming Part of Russia’s Financial Infrastructure
The project also aligns with Russia’s broader effort to diversify its financial infrastructure as sanctions continue to reshape international trade and cross-border payments.
Although the primary focus is domestic regulation, digital assets are increasingly viewed as another financial rail that can complement traditional banking services. By combining custody, trading and banking within a single platform, Sberbank is positioning cryptocurrency as part of mainstream financial services rather than a separate investment market.
