SEC Approves Nasdaq Bitcoin Index Options in Major Crypto Derivatives Expansion

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission approved Nasdaq’s Bitcoin Index Options on May 22, marking another major step in integrating crypto derivatives into traditional financial markets.
Summary:
- SEC approved Nasdaq Bitcoin Index Options under ticker QBTC.
- Product tracks the CME CF Bitcoin Real Time Index divided by 100.
- Approval strengthens Wall Street’s growing crypto derivatives infrastructure.
The accelerated approval allows Nasdaq PHLX LLC to list and trade cash-settled Bitcoin index options under the ticker QBTC, giving institutional investors a new mechanism to hedge broad Bitcoin exposure without relying on individual exchange-traded funds.
The product differs significantly from existing Bitcoin ETF options because it tracks the broader Bitcoin market rather than a single fund such as BlackRock’s IBIT.
According to the SEC filing, the contracts are tied to the CME CF Bitcoin Real Time Index (BRTI), an institutional-grade benchmark regulated by the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority. The options will be cash-settled using the CF NQBTC Options Settlement Value rather than requiring physical Bitcoin delivery.
To reduce risks tied to market manipulation near expiration, the settlement calculation uses a structured one-hour pricing window between 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. New York time. That window is divided into twelve separate five-minute intervals designed to produce a volume-weighted median settlement price.
Regulatory Momentum Accelerates
The approval follows months of regulatory scrutiny.
Nasdaq originally submitted its proposal in September 2025, but the SEC later opened additional proceedings to review market structure, pricing methodology and manipulation safeguards.
Momentum shifted after Nasdaq filed Amendment No. 1 on May 15, refining definitions tied to reporting authorities while adjusting minimum price increments to address regulatory concerns surrounding liquidity and settlement stability.

The decision also arrived shortly after the SEC expanded position limits for existing Bitcoin ETF options markets.
Earlier this week, regulators approved a rule change allowing options tied to BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) to scale up to one million contracts. Analysts said the rapid growth in crypto options liquidity helped demonstrate that the market could support larger institutional derivative structures without triggering destabilizing squeezes or concentrated positioning risks.
Wall Street’s Crypto Infrastructure Deepens
Institutional demand for regulated crypto hedging tools has accelerated sharply throughout 2026 as asset managers, hedge funds and trading firms increase exposure to spot Bitcoin ETFs and corporate treasury holdings.
Unlike ETF-specific options, index-based derivatives allow investors to hedge broader market exposure without introducing fund-specific tracking risks or operational differences between issuers.
Market participants said the SEC’s decision represents another signal that regulators are increasingly treating Bitcoin under frameworks similar to traditional commodities markets such as gold, oil and equity indexes.
The approval effectively completes another layer of Wall Street’s institutional crypto stack.
Investors now have access to spot Bitcoin ETFs, options tied to individual ETF products, CME futures and, with QBTC, broad index-linked Bitcoin options operating under traditional exchange infrastructure.
Analysts said the launch could further deepen institutional participation in crypto markets by improving capital efficiency, expanding hedging flexibility and increasing overall market liquidity across regulated trading venues.
