Senators Investigate CFTC Chair’s Communications with FTX Founder
U.S. Senators Elizabeth Warren and Chuck Grassley have formally requested information from CFTC Chair Rostin Behnam regarding his communications with Sam Bankman-Fried, the former CEO of the cryptocurrency exchange FTX.
The senators seek a comprehensive record of all meetings, phone calls, and emails between Behnam and Bankman-Fried during the chairman’s tenure, highlighting concerns about regulatory oversight in cryptocurrency markets.
The investigation underscores broader issues among U.S. lawmakers regarding the supervision of cryptocurrency markets and the need for transparency and accountability in regulatory relationships.
Behnam disclosed in a Senate Agriculture Committee hearing that he and his team had around 10 meetings with FTX executives, including Bankman-Fried, in the 14 months preceding the exchange’s collapse.
These interactions, initially routine regulatory discussions, have now come under scrutiny following FTX’s downfall and its founder’s involvement in criminal activities.

The senators’ request, detailed in a list of documents and communications to be submitted by April 29, 2024, aims to shed light on the nature of the relationship between the CFTC and FTX before the exchange’s demise.
It includes examination of the CFTC’s engagement with FTX, which extended beyond routine regulatory reviews to assessing the exchange’s applications for new crypto derivatives products.
This investigation reflects broader concerns about regulatory review processes and the potential for conflicts of interest or undue influence.
