S&P and Pantera Launch Revenue-Focused Crypto Benchmark Index

S&P and Pantera Launch Revenue-Focused Crypto Benchmark Index

S&P Dow Jones Indices and Pantera Capital have launched the S&P Pantera Digital Asset Index, a new benchmark designed to help institutional investors gain diversified exposure to digital assets based on network fundamentals rather than market capitalization or price performance.

Summary:

  • The index tracks 18 digital assets selected using a revenue-based methodology.
  • Bitcoin and XRP are excluded, while Ethereum, BNB, Solana, TRON and Hyperliquid are among the largest constituents.
  • The benchmark is intended to support institutional portfolio allocation and future investment products.
  • The methodology prioritizes blockchain networks with measurable economic activity over speculative market performance.

Revenue, Not Market Value, Drives Selection

Unlike traditional cryptocurrency indices, which typically weight assets by market capitalization or liquidity, the S&P Pantera Digital Asset Index evaluates blockchain networks based on their underlying economic activity.

The methodology focuses on projects that generate recurring on-chain revenue and demonstrate sustained usage, applying a rules-based framework similar to those used across traditional equity benchmarks.

The inaugural index contains 18 digital assets, with Ethereum, BNB, Solana, TRON and Hyperliquid representing its largest allocations.

Notably, Bitcoin and XRP are absent from the benchmark because the methodology emphasizes revenue-generating blockchain ecosystems rather than assets whose primary role is serving as a store of value or payment network. In a CNBC interview, Chief Executive Cathy Clay described the index as a fundamentals-based framework built for diversified institutional portfolios:

S&P Dow Jones Indices helps investors cut through market noise with benchmarks you can trust.

Benchmark Targets Institutional Portfolio Construction

The index has been developed as a reference benchmark rather than a passive investment product, providing institutional investors with a standardized way to evaluate digital asset exposure.

According to S&P Dow Jones Indices and Pantera, the benchmark is intended to support portfolio construction, performance measurement and the potential development of investment vehicles linked to the index.

By applying transparent inclusion rules instead of discretionary asset selection, the methodology aims to provide a more consistent framework for investors seeking diversified exposure to blockchain networks with established economic activity.

Pantera Founder Dan Morehead said one of the biggest challenges facing institutional investors remains determining how to allocate capital across an increasingly diverse digital asset market, adding that the index was designed to identify blockchain infrastructure with long-term relevance.

Launch Reflects Shift Toward Fundamental Analysis

The launch comes as institutional participation in digital assets continues to expand beyond single-asset investment products focused on Bitcoin and Ethereum.

Asset managers have increasingly sought benchmarks that evaluate blockchain networks using metrics such as protocol revenue, user activity and ecosystem adoption instead of relying solely on token prices or market capitalization.

The index combines on-chain analytics from Artemis Analytics with digital asset pricing data from Lukka, providing a standardized methodology for measuring blockchain networks based on economic activity rather than market sentiment.

Pantera Capital also noted that historical performance shown before the index’s July 20, 2026 launch is back-tested rather than actual performance. The results were generated by applying the methodology retrospectively and should not be interpreted as evidence of future returns.

Beyond serving as a performance benchmark, the index introduces a transparent framework for evaluating digital assets based on measurable financial activity. By emphasizing protocols that generate recurring revenue and incorporate clear token value-accrual mechanisms, the methodology offers institutional investors another way to assess blockchain networks beyond price performance alone while giving developers a clearer benchmark for designing economically sustainable ecosystems.
