The US and UK Collaborate on AI Safety Standards
On April 1, the United States and the United Kingdom signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) aimed at developing standards for AI Safety.
The agreement seeks to create robust evaluation methods for AI models, systems, and agents through coordinated scientific efforts.
Under this partnership, both countries plan to conduct joint testing exercises on publicly accessible AI models and exchange personnel between their respective AI Safety Institutes. The collaboration, effective immediately, was announced by the US Department of Commerce and the UK’s Department for Science, Innovation, and Technology in identical press releases.
US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo hailed AI as the defining technology of our generation and emphasized the partnership’s focus on addressing various risks associated with AI, including national security and societal concerns. UK Technology Secretary Michelle Donelan echoed these sentiments, describing the pursuit of safe AI development as a global imperative.
