Tokenized RWA Market Hits $46.2B as Institutional Use Expands

Tokenized real-world assets have grown into a $46.2 billion market, but activity underneath that headline figure is beginning to provide a better measure of adoption.
Summary:
- RWA growth is shifting from simply issuing assets onchain toward putting them to work in DeFi.
- U.S. Treasuries and yield strategies dominate the market, reinforcing income-producing assets as the main institutional entry point.
- BlackRock and JPMorgan are connecting tokenization with cash management, settlement and transfers, rather than treating blockchain issuance as the end product.
Token Terminal data shared on September 20 shows $3.6 billion of RWA value deposited in DeFi, equivalent to 7.8% of the market. Decentralized exchange volume reached $419.3 million over 24 hours.
Usage is also growing faster than the overall market. RWA DeFi TVL increased 3.7% over 30 days and 10.8% over 90 days, while DEX volume rose 14.8% and 64.1%, respectively.
The figures point to a gradual transition from tokenization as an issuance mechanism toward assets that can be transferred, traded and eventually used as collateral across blockchain-based financial markets.
Treasuries and Yield Products Control Most of the Market
The $46.2 billion market remains heavily concentrated in yield-bearing assets.
U.S. Treasury products are the largest category at $13.9 billion, representing roughly 30% of the total. Yield strategies account for another $10.7 billion, followed by credit funds at $6.5 billion and tokenized gold at $5.2 billion.
Together, those four categories represent almost 79% of the RWA market.
Stocks remain considerably smaller at $2.7 billion, while real estate accounts for $1.3 billion and tokenized ETFs approximately $683 million.
RWA Market Breakdown
The composition shows where institutional tokenization has gained the strongest foothold. Cash-like and yield-generating instruments remain far ahead of tokenized equities and alternative assets.
For institutional investors, that makes sense. Tokenization changes how ownership can be recorded, transferred and settled without requiring investors to take exposure to an unfamiliar underlying asset. A tokenized Treasury fund remains a Treasury fund even if its shares move over Ethereum.
BlackRock Builds $2.4B Onchain Fund Business
BlackRock has accumulated approximately $2.4 billion in combined onchain assets across BUIDL, BRSRV and BSTBL, according to information shared by Token Terminal in X.

The expansion shows how its tokenization strategy has moved beyond a single flagship product.
BlackRock launched BRSRV and BSTBL in August. BSTBL is a tokenized share class of an existing money-market fund issued on Ethereum, with BNY serving as transfer agent and tokenization provider. Shares can move between approved investor wallets subject to applicable restrictions.
BRSRV, meanwhile, targets digitally native institutional investors and is designed for applications including stablecoin reserve management, with Securitize providing transfer-agent and tokenization infrastructure.
The underlying investment strategy remains conventional. The products hold assets including cash, short-term U.S. Treasuries and Treasury-backed repurchase agreements.
What changes is the financial infrastructure surrounding those assets. Ownership can be represented onchain and transfers can use blockchain settlement while the regulated fund structure remains intact.
JPMorgan Nears $900M Across Two Ethereum Funds
JPMorgan is building a similar model around JLTXX and MONY, which Token Terminal puts at roughly $900 million in combined tokenized assets.

MONY launched in December 2025 as JPMorgan Asset Management’s first tokenized money-market fund on a public blockchain. The private-placement product targets qualified investors and invests primarily in U.S. Treasuries and Treasury-backed repurchase agreements.
JPMorgan expanded that strategy in May 2026 with JLTXX, a registered government money-market fund launched on Ethereum with an initial $100 million investment from JPMorgan Asset Management.
Token Terminal’s latest data indicates that JLTXX now accounts for the majority of JPMorgan’s approximately $900 million tokenized fund footprint.

The funds are also connected to Morgan Money, JPMorgan’s institutional liquidity-management platform, while Kinexys provides infrastructure linking traditional fund operations with public blockchain settlement.
This is where tokenization begins to move beyond issuance. JPMorgan is integrating blockchain-based fund ownership into infrastructure already used by institutional treasury clients rather than creating a parallel crypto-only investment product.
Public Blockchains Do Not Make the Funds Permissionless
Ethereum provides the settlement infrastructure for several of these products, but that does not mean anyone with an Ethereum wallet can freely buy or receive them.
JLTXX is limited to eligible qualified investors. MONY also carries investor eligibility requirements. BlackRock’s BSTBL similarly restricts transfers to approved wallets.
The distinction is fundamental to the institutional RWA model.
A blockchain can remain public while the financial asset operating on top of it remains permissioned. Smart contracts can incorporate controls such as wallet allowlists, restricting transfers to addresses associated with eligible investors.
That allows financial institutions to use public blockchain settlement without removing the compliance rules attached to regulated securities.
It also explains why growth in tokenized assets should not automatically be equated with growth in permissionless DeFi. A token may exist on Ethereum while remaining inaccessible to most Ethereum users.
Only 7.8% of RWA Value Has Reached DeFi
This divide is visible in Token Terminal’s numbers.
Of the $46.2 billion in tokenized RWAs, only $3.6 billion is currently deposited into DeFi venues. More than 90% therefore remains outside decentralized finance.
Trading activity is smaller still relative to the size of the market. The $419.3 million in 24-hour DEX volume represents approximately 0.9% of total RWA market capitalization.
But the direction of those metrics is worth watching.
DEX volume has increased 64.1% over 90 days, considerably faster than the 1.1% increase in overall RWA market capitalization DeFi TVL rose 10.8% over the same period.
That divergence suggests utilization is expanding faster than issuance, at least over the latest three-month window.
For DeFi protocols, the next opportunity is therefore less about adding another tokenized asset and more about making existing assets usable as collateral, liquidity and settlement instruments.
The same applies to blockchain networks competing for institutional activity. Hosting a tokenized fund establishes issuance. Repeated transfers, secondary trading and collateral use generate a deeper layer of onchain activity.
BlackRock and JPMorgan already demonstrate how regulated funds can operate on public blockchain rails without abandoning investor restrictions. The next test is whether the wider RWA market follows them from onchain issuance into onchain use.
