Trump Pressures Fed for Rate Cuts, Raises Speculation Over Powell’s Future

Donald Trump is escalating his pressure on the Federal Reserve, pushing for interest rate cuts due to what he perceives as falling food and energy prices that justify a shift in policy.

Sources indicate that if the Fed doesn’t meet his demands, Trump may take further action, possibly attempting to remove Chairman Jerome Powell.

This latest round of frustration comes after the Fed chose to maintain interest rates at 4.25% to 4.5% last week, a decision that has not sat well with the former president. Trump has voiced his discontent publicly, using platforms like Truth Social, asserting that lowering rates would stimulate economic activity and counteract any negative consequences from his planned trade moves. Powell, however, has been more cautious, warning that inflation could be reignited by Trump’s upcoming tariffs. The Fed’s new projections suggest inflation is unlikely to decrease much further this year, particularly due to the anticipated impact of these tariffs.

One of the most notable developments is Trump’s plan to impose new tariffs, starting on April 2, which he has dubbed “Liberation Day.” These tariffs are intended as a retaliatory measure against foreign trade barriers on American goods. However, economists caution that this move could throw a wrench in the Fed’s attempts to stabilize the economy. Speculation is growing that if Trump’s requests are ignored, he might not hesitate to take a dramatic step, such as dismissing Powell, a move that could shake up financial markets. Powell’s current term extends until 2026, and despite any pressure, he has stated he would not resign early.

While some experts believe such a drastic move is unlikely, others suggest Trump’s aggressive stance could still lead to unexpected outcomes. In the past, he has shown a willingness to remove independent agency officials, as seen with his ousting of two Democratic members from the Federal Trade Commission. Legal experts highlight the 1935 Supreme Court ruling in Humphrey’s Executor v. United States, which protects independent officials from arbitrary dismissal. If Trump moves forward with such a challenge, it could spark a significant legal battle with broader implications for the relationship between the executive branch and independent agencies like the Fed.
