Vitalik Buterin Introduces The Splurge – The Update That Will Transform Ethereum
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has outlined “The Splurge,” an initiative aimed at enhancing the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) through various protocol upgrades.
These improvements are designed to boost EVM efficiency, meet infrastructure needs, and incorporate new functionalities to support Ethereum’s scalability and security.
Buterin noted that the existing EVM design poses challenges in terms of efficiency and adaptability, complicating code verification and limiting advanced security features. The introduction of the Ethereum Object Format (EOF) aims to simplify code integration and improve functionality.
While implementing EOF requires expanded code and more rigorous static checks, it can streamline EVM implementations and facilitate Layer 1 optimizations.

Enhancements to the EVM at Layer 1 will also improve compatibility with Layer 2 (L2) solutions. Proposed features, such as EVM-MAX and SIMD, are expected to lower gas fees and enhance L2 efficiency. Additionally, these upgrades could enable quantum-resistant cryptography and simplify privacy protocols by reducing reliance on relayers, addressing centralization risks.
In response to Buterin’s announcement, some community members expressed concerns about the complexity of these changes, questioning their practicality and suggesting he focus on personal time management.
