Vitalik Buterin Playfully Introduces Himself as Dogecoin Hodler at EDCON 2024
At the EDCON 2024 conference held in Tokyo from July 24 to 30, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin made a memorable entrance.
Dressed in a dark kimono and sporting a white horse head mask, Buterin playfully disguised himself before revealing his identity. When asked “Who are you?” Buterin humorously introduced himself as a Dogecoin hodler.
While the theatrical start grabbed attention, Buterin’s main focus was his speech about Ethereum’s long-term future. His choice to highlight his Dogecoin involvement was notable given his history with the cryptocurrency.
Buterin had previously discussed his Dogecoin investment with podcast host Lex Friedman, revealing that a $25,000 investment in 2016 had grown to $4.3 million by mid-2021. He donated these gains to charity, acknowledging the investment’s success despite its speculative nature.

In addition to his investment, Buterin has supported Dogecoin through substantial donations, including $1 million in Ethereum and 20 million DOGE to the Dogecoin Foundation. He joined the Foundation’s advisory board in August 2021 and has even explored the idea of Dogecoin transitioning to Proof-of-Stake.
Buterin has been less supportive of Shiba Inu, Dogecoin’s rival, despite its Ethereum foundation. He predicted that SHIB would ultimately fall short of its hype, although he admitted it had performed better than expected.
