Vitalik Buterin Reveals His Ethereum Foundation Salary
Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum’s co-founder, recently disclosed that his annual salary from the Ethereum Foundation (EF) is around $139,500.
While this amount is modest compared to his substantial net worth, which reached $1.5 billion in 2022 Buterin’s current crypto holdings are valued at roughly $625 million, based on data from blockchain analytics platform Arkham Intelligence.
Buterin also highlighted an update from Josh Stark of EF regarding the organization’s financial allocations. The largest portion of EF’s spending is dedicated to what they call “New Institutions.” This includes funding for new organizations that aim to strengthen the Ethereum ecosystem, such as the Nomic Foundation and 0xPARC Foundation.

EF’s internal spending covers teams like Geth, Solidity, Devcon, and Next Billion, all of which operate transparently, sharing their activities on various platforms. The foundation also continues to support external projects through grants, with recent recipients including Xerxis, Espacio Cripto, ETHKL, and Borderless Africa.

Despite its contributions, EF frequently faces scrutiny, particularly when it makes large transfers to exchanges, which some view as signals of potential market shifts. On August 23, EF executed its largest transfer of 2024, raising concerns among market watchers. Stark pointed out that it’s simple to verify these transactions, as EF’s treasury is fully transparent and visible on the blockchain.
