Ethereum Shifts From Incremental Upgrades to Long-Term Architecture

Unlike previous milestones such as The Merge or Dencun, the Lean Ethereum roadmap is not centered on a single hard fork.
Instead, it represents a long-term redesign of Ethereum’s underlying infrastructure, with multiple protocol upgrades expected to be delivered gradually through future development cycles.

The strategy reflects a broader evolution in Ethereum’s priorities.

Rather than simply increasing transaction throughput, developers are seeking to simplify the protocol itself while improving scalability, reducing validator requirements and preparing the network for future technological challenges such as quantum computing.

According to Buterin, the objective is to create a blockchain that becomes easier to verify, more secure to operate and capable of supporting significantly greater transaction volumes without sacrificing decentralization.

Five Priorities Define Lean Ethereum

The roadmap is built around five long-term objectives designed to modernize Ethereum’s infrastructure.

  • Scalability: Introduce new state architectures capable of supporting significantly larger on-chain data while lowering transaction costs.

  • Native privacy: Expand protocol-level privacy capabilities without compromising transparency where required.
  • Formal verification: Increase mathematical verification of protocol components to improve long-term network security.

Together, these initiatives aim to improve both developer efficiency and network resilience while preserving compatibility with Ethereum’s existing ecosystem.

How Lean Ethereum Improves the Network

One of the roadmap’s most significant proposals involves replacing Ethereum’s traditional execution verification model with recursive STARK proofs.

Today, validators must independently re-execute transactions to verify network activity. Under the proposed architecture, validators would instead verify compact cryptographic proofs confirming that computations were executed correctly.

This approach substantially reduces computational requirements while allowing more transactions to be processed with lower hardware demands, making node participation more accessible and strengthening decentralization.

Another major priority is post-quantum cryptography.

Although practical quantum computers capable of breaking existing encryption standards do not yet exist, Ethereum developers want to prepare the protocol well before such technology becomes commercially viable. Research is currently focused on integrating quantum-resistant signature schemes capable of protecting digital assets against future cryptographic threats.

The roadmap also introduces new scalable state architectures—including alternative storage models such as UTXO-based structures and ring buffers—designed to support as much as 100 terabytes of blockchain state by 2030. Developers estimate that migrating certain applications, including ERC-20 tokens and NFT collections, could reduce transaction costs by more than tenfold.

Meanwhile, proposed consensus improvements seek to shorten transaction finality by separating data availability from final settlement, allowing transactions to reach confirmation more quickly while improving network predictability.

Compatibility Remains a Core Design Principle

Despite the scale of the proposed changes, Ethereum developers emphasize that backward compatibility remains one of the roadmap’s central design goals.

Existing wallets, smart contracts, decentralized applications and digital assets are expected to continue functioning without requiring users to migrate funds or rebuild applications.

The roadmap also preserves the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) while exploring additional execution environments such as leanISA and RISC-V for applications requiring specialized performance or enhanced privacy.

Maintaining compatibility is intended to minimize disruption for developers while allowing the protocol to evolve gradually rather than through abrupt architectural changes.

Ethereum Prepares for Its Next Decade

The Lean Ethereum roadmap arrives during a period of increasing competition among Layer-1 blockchains, many of which have focused on maximizing throughput through increasingly complex architectures.

Buterin’s proposal takes a different approach.

Rather than pursuing scalability through greater protocol complexity, Ethereum aims to simplify its core infrastructure while allowing modular innovation to develop around it.

Several milestones—including the Hegota (H-star) upgrade, the subsequent I-star series and the planned Glasterdam upgrade—will gradually introduce elements of the new architecture over the coming years.

For investors and developers alike, the roadmap offers more than a technical update. It provides a long-term vision for how Ethereum intends to remain competitive as blockchain adoption expands into institutional finance, tokenization and digital infrastructure.
