Zcash Prepares Ironwood Upgrade to Verify Supply Integrity

Zcash is set to activate its Ironwood network upgrade on July 28, introducing a new shielded pool and a migration process that will allow the network to verify whether a previously disclosed vulnerability ever resulted in unauthorized ZEC creation.
Summary:
- Zcash will activate its Ironwood network upgrade on July 28, introducing a new shielded pool.
- The migration is designed to verify whether a previously disclosed vulnerability was ever exploited.
- Exchanges and wallet providers have coordinated support ahead of the network transition.
The upgrade follows the disclosure of a critical software flaw earlier this year and represents one of the protocol’s most significant privacy infrastructure changes in recent years.
Upgrade Introduces a New Shielded Pool
Ironwood is scheduled to activate at block height 3,428,143, expected between 12:00 and 1:00 p.m. UTC on July 28.
Once activated, the network will permanently close the legacy Orchard shielded pool to new deposits and internal transfers while opening a newly patched replacement. Users wishing to continue using shielded transactions will migrate funds through a built-in transfer mechanism known as the turnstile.
The process is intended to be gradual, with developers advising users not to rush transfers as exchanges, wallets and node operators complete the upgrade.
Why the Migration Matters
The network change follows the discovery of an inflation vulnerability identified in May by Shielded Labs security researcher Taylor Hornby.
The flaw, often referred to as the “infinite bug,” theoretically allowed an attacker to create counterfeit ZEC within the Orchard shielded pool without triggering normal validation checks. Although developers found no evidence that the vulnerability had been exploited, the privacy features of the affected pool made independent verification impossible under the previous design.
The disclosure triggered heightened scrutiny of Zcash’s supply model and contributed to increased price volatility after the issue became public.
Turnstile Creates a Verifiable Accounting Process
Ironwood introduces an accounting mechanism designed to independently validate the migration from the old pool to the new one.
Every coin leaving the legacy Orchard pool will be recorded as it passes through the turnstile into the upgraded shielded pool. Because the system tracks both deposits and withdrawals during the transition, nodes will be able to compare the total amount exiting the original pool with the amount that legitimately entered it.

If withdrawals remain consistent with historical deposits, the migration will reinforce confidence that the protocol’s 21 million ZEC supply limit has remained intact. Any discrepancy would immediately become detectable through the network’s accounting process.
Rather than serving as a routine software update, the migration functions as a large-scale verification event for one of Zcash’s core monetary guarantees.
Ecosystem Readies for Activation
Infrastructure providers have spent recent weeks preparing for the hard fork.
Major exchanges and wallet developers have coordinated software updates to support the transition, while several wallet providers are introducing simplified migration tools for users holding Orchard funds.
The coordinated rollout is intended to minimize disruption while ensuring the network reaches consensus on the upgraded rules immediately after activation.
Technical Outlook
At the time of writing, ZEC traded around $503 after recovering from last week’s lows.
On the four-hour chart, the token has rebounded above the 20-period simple moving average near $492, while remaining below the 50-period ($515) and 100-period ($525) moving averages, indicating that buyers have regained short-term momentum but still face overhead resistance.

The Relative Strength Index (RSI) stood at 52, suggesting neutral momentum following the recent recovery and leaving room for further price movement in either direction as traders monitor the outcome of the Ironwood activation.
A sustained move above the $515-$525 resistance zone could strengthen the near-term technical outlook, while initial support sits around $492, followed by the 200-period moving average near $480 if selling pressure returns.
