Zcash Returns to 2018 Prices as ETF Access Enters the Equation

Zcash (ZEC) surged to an eight-year high on August 22, extending one of the crypto market's strongest recent rallies as Grayscale advanced plans to convert its existing Zcash Trust into a U.S.-listed exchange-traded fund.
Summary:
- Zcash climbed above $850, reaching its highest price since January 2018.
- Grayscale has moved closer to converting its existing Zcash Trust into a U.S. spot ETF.
- ZEC has now recovered sharply from the selloff triggered by June’s Orchard vulnerability disclosure.
- Technical momentum remains strong, although the 4-hour RSI signals increasingly stretched conditions.
ZEC briefly traded above $850 before easing to around $838 at the time of writing, leaving the token far above the levels reached during June’s security-driven selloff.
The move is notable not simply because of its size. Zcash is revisiting prices last seen in January 2018 only weeks after investors were forced to reassess one of the network’s most serious cryptographic vulnerabilities.
Grayscale ETF Filing Changes the Institutional Case for Zcash
The immediate catalyst is Grayscale’s latest amendment to its registration statement with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
The August 21 filing advances Grayscale’s effort to convert the Zcash Trust, which has operated since 2017, into an ETF listed on NYSE Arca. The proposed product would trade under the ticker ZCH, carry a 2.5% annual sponsor fee, use BNY Mellon as transfer agent and administrator, and Coinbase Custody Trust Company as custodian.
The distinction between an existing private investment vehicle and an exchange-traded product matters for ZEC’s market structure. An ETF would give investors brokerage-based exposure without requiring them to buy ZEC directly, manage private keys or interact with crypto exchanges.
Grayscale’s existing position also means the proposal is not starting with an empty vehicle. Its Zcash Trust held more than $260 million in assets under management as of August 21, according to The Block.
There is another potentially significant source of demand in the filing process. A subsidiary of Grayscale parent Digital Currency Group has been discussing a potential contribution of approximately 200,000 ZEC to the fund. Those discussions are non-binding, meaning there is no commitment that the transaction will occur.
For the market, that distinction is crucial. The ETF filing creates a possible institutional access channel, while the proposed 200,000
ZEC transaction represents potential demand rather than completed buying.
ZEC’s Recovery Has Reversed the June Security Selloff
The rally also needs to be viewed against what happened less than three months ago.
Security researcher Taylor Hornby discovered a critical vulnerability in Zcash’s Orchard shielded pool on May 29. The flaw could theoretically have allowed an attacker to create unlimited counterfeit ZEC within Orchard without producing an observable record of the inflation.
Developers coordinated an emergency response and completed the remediation by June 2. Shielded Labs said previous exploitation was considered unlikely, although Orchard’s privacy properties make it impossible to prove cryptographically that the vulnerability was never used.
The disclosure hit ZEC hard. The token dropped more than 30% during the initial reaction, while the subsequent selloff eventually pushed prices toward the $250 area.
That makes the current move unusually significant from a market-structure perspective. ZEC has not merely recovered its pre-disclosure valuation. It has repriced far beyond it.

The June event therefore created two separate risks that investors had to price: whether the historical ZEC supply could be trusted and whether confidence in the privacy protocol itself had been permanently damaged. The subsequent recovery suggests the market is assigning substantially less weight to those risks than it did immediately after disclosure, although the inability to retrospectively verify Orchard activity remains part of Zcash’s technical history.
Why the ETF Proposal Matters More After the Orchard Crisis
Grayscale’s filing intersects directly with the security issue rather than existing independently of it.
An institutional investment product holding ZEC requires investors to evaluate the integrity of its underlying asset. Grayscale’s registration materials themselves address the Orchard vulnerability and the subsequent response, putting the issue inside the disclosure framework prospective ETF investors would examine.
The proposed conversion also changes where ZEC demand could originate. Direct ownership has historically required investors to accept crypto-specific infrastructure and custody arrangements. ETF shares would instead package price exposure inside traditional securities accounts.
That does not automatically create inflows. It removes part of the operational barrier to obtaining exposure.
For an asset such as Zcash, the difference may be particularly relevant because privacy-focused cryptocurrencies have faced a narrower institutional market than Bitcoin and Ethereum. Approval of the Grayscale conversion would test whether regulated U.S. investment products can broaden that market.
Zcash Price Tests $850 With Momentum at Extreme Levels
The 4-hour ZEC/USD chart shows how rapidly the market has repriced.

ZEC was trading around $838.10 at the time of the TradingView snapshot after reaching an intraday high of approximately $855.60.
The larger rally briefly carried the token toward the $865 region before sellers appeared.
Price remains dramatically above every major moving average on the chart:
- 20-period SMA: $666.66
- 50-period SMA: $567.27
- 100-period SMA: $532.49
- 200-period SMA: $511.67
That alignment confirms a strong short-term trend, but the distance between price and the moving averages has become unusually wide.
The 14-period RSI stands at 81.63, while its accompanying average is near 83.86. An RSI above 80 does not itself mean that ZEC must reverse, particularly during a momentum-driven breakout, but it indicates that buying has become heavily concentrated and increases sensitivity to profit-taking.
The first immediate test sits around $850-$865, where the latest advance has encountered supply. A sustained move through that zone would leave relatively little recent price structure available as resistance because ZEC has not traded at these levels for years.
On the downside, the recent consolidation around $780-$800 becomes the first area to watch if momentum fades. Below it, the gap between spot price and the 20-period SMA near $667 illustrates how far ZEC has moved away from its short-term trend baseline.
The next concrete event is now regulatory rather than technical. Grayscale’s registration statement still needs to become effective before the proposed Zcash ETF can begin operating in its intended form, while any final terms, timing and potential DCG participation remain subject to change. The SEC filing process will therefore determine whether the rally’s institutional-access narrative develops into an investable U.S. product or remains primarily a pricing catalyst.
