Bitcoin Investor Roger Ver Faces DOJ Charges for Alleged Tax Fraud
The United States Department of Justice has announced charges against Roger Ver, an early Bitcoin investor famously known as 'Bitcoin Jesus.'
According to the Justice Department, Ver was arrested in Spain on charges including mail fraud, tax evasion, and filing false tax returns. Allegedly, he defrauded the IRS of around $48 million by failing to report capital gains from his Bitcoin and other asset sales.
The indictment, filed on Feb. 15 and unsealed on April 29, claims that Ver gained control of approximately 70,000 BTC in June 2017, before the significant bull run, and sold many of them for $240 million.
U.S. officials intend to extradite him from Spain to stand trial in the United States.

Reactions on social media to Ver’s arrest varied. Bitcoiner Dan Held, former growth lead at Kraken, stated that Ver “deserves everything that he’s about to get” after allegedly causing harm to Bitcoin and engaging in contentious behavior.
Ver, known for his advocacy of Bitcoin Cash, had previously been involved in a scandal with crypto investment platform CoinFlex in 2022, where he was accused of owing $47 million in USD Coin. At the time of publication, Ver had not commented on the Justice Department charges.
