IT Expert Pursues £1.5 Billion Bitcoin Lost in Landfill

James Howells, a 38-year-old IT expert, is embroiled in a legal dispute aiming to reclaim a hard drive containing Bitcoin now valued at around £1.5 billion.

The saga began a decade ago when a cleaning error resulted in the disposal of the hard drive at a local landfill, unaware of its significance.

Containing private keys to access 8,000 Bitcoins, the hard drive represents an immense fortune that Howells has been determined to recover over the years.

His efforts have now led him to the High Court, where he seeks access to the landfill to retrieve his property.

Backed by hedge fund investors, Howells’ legal team comprises search experts and data recovery engineers.

Despite the challenges posed by years of burial, they remain hopeful of restoring the hard drive.

Despite Howells’ offer to share the recovered Bitcoin’s proceeds with the council, their cooperation has been elusive.
