Dubbed “Brokewell,” the malware disguises itself as a fake Google Chrome browser update, mimicking Google’s messaging style. Once users access the deceptive page, they are prompted to update Chrome.
Those who fall prey to the ruse grant criminals full control over their devices, enabling them to pilfer banking credentials entered on-screen, record audio, gather device information, access call logs, and track geolocation.
ThreatFabric warns that Brokewell represents a significant threat to the banking sector, with its capabilities evolving daily.
The malicious application, identified as a previously unknown malware strain, boasts extensive features, including accessibility logging, which records all device interactions and sends the data to a command-and-control server.

Such malware, like Brokewell, poses a severe risk to financial institution clients, resulting in undetectable fraud cases. ThreatFabric advocates for a robust fraud detection solution, incorporating various indicators to combat such threats effectively.
In response to the escalating threat, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) issues guidelines to mitigate malware risks. Recommendations include downloading software from trusted sources, avoiding suspicious links, ignoring pop-ups, heeding browser security alerts, and conducting device scans for malicious activity.
